Hi guys, does anyone have an idea, based of his own experience, of a great quality steel for an hunter's knife, that hold the edge long enough to skinn and quarter more animal and also will be easy to resharp in case, after a lot of use ?

For you perhaps N690Co .Easy to find there , stainless steel , easy to sharpen , good wear resistance !

Thank you Karl, what you mean with the kind of heat treatment and the geometries of the blade, can you explain me the secret ? If you can tell me that shortly or give me a trace to study the things

Have you met our member Herlock ? He's in Bergamo and maybe he can guide you better with out language problems.
For N690Co you want about 59-60 HRC hardness .

Thanks, no I don't know Herlock ... It would be for sure more easy to talk in italian

Hello,
I'm using with great results the tool steel 1.2442 with a 2% of tungsten. It will get a 61/62 HRC with a very fine, long lasting edge. You may know the german knifemaker Stefan Mast, he's using this steel, too for his Nicker knives.

This is the last one I did with 1.2442

another one

This steel is perfect for a hunting knife!

Nicolas

@stezann
the 1.2519 is a great steel, too, nearly the same as 1.2442, just a little less tungsten.
Problem with 1.2442, that you can't get it in thicker than 3,3mm stock.

Nicolas

Thanks guys, I've read that the tool steel 1.2519 is one of the finest NON-stainless steels available for knives instead the 1.2442 is a stainless one ; this would be important in an hunter to use ..
regards
rino

Why the desire for NON- stainless steel ? The N690 [1.2442 ] is like the Japanese VG-10 .I have both and think they would answer your needs.

Herlock has a thread in the " The Great Outdoors " section at this time .

If You want long lasting edge try Elmax or RWL-34. They're stainless and good wear resistant and not so much expensive. Actually I make two hunter knives from Elmax, loveless-like design.

been loving the CTS-204P folder i made myself
get some diamond hones and never worry about what steel you are sharpening

Mete, some people just don't like stainless steel. It's OK man. :D

Stainless: Hitachi ATS-34

Carbon: 52100

With proper heat treat and grind geometries!

Thanks guys,
I'm not a knifemaker but I can understand that every heat treat match a kind of steel but let me know what do you mean speaking from grind geometries ..

While the cutting ability of a blade depends on the steel and the heat treatment , the shape of the edge is just as important. A good convex shape is what you want . You can use as fine a finish as you like . Do this without a machine .A machine can damage the heat treat because of the heat.
I find a compter "mouse pad " [a foam rubber sheet ] and some wet/dry abrasive paper with water and easy way .Vary downward pressure and angle until you get the edge you want. Use finer and finer abrasive QB ! [ quando bisogna , like a cook book says ! ]
