steel for kitchen duty

I'm thinking about trying something for the kitchen and I was thinking of using CPM154 at .09375" thick for the blade, but my problem is that I can't find any that is wide enough without buying a very large piece. I don't make many knives per year and it's strictly a hobby that doesn't yet support itself. Does anyone know a supplier that will sell a piece say 6" x 6" x .09375".

If not, maybe someone could offer some advice for 5" or 6" wide steel in the same 3/32nd thickness that would be a good alternate. The steel requirements need to be stainless and pretty easy to maintain. My father-in-law may get this tool and he just might put it in the dishwasher. (I know, I'm trying to train him but I can't watch him all the time)

Any thoughts?

The 5-6" width is not a problem. It is the 6" length that will find some trouble. Most suppliers sell in an 18" minimum, a few will sell by the foot. Call Crucible steel and see if they can sell you a piece that small.
Another choice would be CPM S30V, it was specifically developed for high grade cutlery.
If it will end up in the dish washer, use Micarta handles.

You could get the smallest size you can get, cut off what you want/need and resell the rest. I don't think a piece of CPM154 would last long. with a bit of a mark down

TKS has 3/32" 440-c by the foot, not the best but still a good kitchen steel. It is in the 6" wide stock.

my $.02, I'll second getting a larger piece and saving the excess for later or reselling. For instance, mcmaster.com has 6"x6"x.125" sections of 440-c, but for the same price you can go to admiral steel and get an 6"x18"x3/32" length of the material you really want.

call crucible TX branch and ask for amy in sales she will help you out. if you need the number let me know.
