Would angle iron bought at Lowe's or Home depot and flat bar coded with red paint be used for making knives?.

Hey Rey,

The answer would be no. I looked at your profile and see that you are a disabled vet.
With that in mind I would be honored to send you a chunk of 1080 if you want some.
Just PM me with your address.

Thanks for your service. Greg

Rey,
welcome to the forums. i am a newbie myself but here is the deal. it takes a certain amount of carbon in a steel to make a knife. the stuff at lowes and home depot is just mild steel meaning it just wont work.
some of the more popular blade steels as far as carbon are these.
O1, W1, D2, W2, A2, 1080, 1084, 1086, 1095, and 5160. now this isnt everything i am sure others can and will add to it. and i wont even go into any of the stainless steels cause i just dont have a clue to be honest.

here are some websites that you might find helpfull.

admiralsteel.com
fastenal.com
flatground.com
onlinemetalsupply.com
southerntoolsteel.com
texasknife.com
mcmaster.com
midwestknifemakers.com

this list is not everyone but it will get you going.

there are also a couple guys on here and around that sell good steel and have great reputations you need to email them both and they will send you a list of what they have.

kelly cupples at octihunter@charter.net

and Aldo Bruno at njsteelbaron@gmail.com

also there is a newbie sticky at the top of the forum with some good info in it. some of it needs to be redone.

could some one post the google search for knives for him?

good luck Rey

jake

Thank you gentlemen for your answers and it sure helps to have great guys like you all for a quick response. Thanks again, Rey

Jake: did you mean how to search for stuff on the forums without having a paid membership?

If so:

Type your search query, then site:bladeforums.com

If you want to look up Aldo Bruno steel on the forums, go to google and type in:

Aldo Bruno steel site:bladeforums.com

yea mike thats what i meant.

isnt google involved with that in some way?

i got it saved on my faves but it seems much longer than it need to be.

jake

Yeah, some people go to a link that is a google search automatically in bladeforums.com, but I find it easier just to type in site:bladeforums.com.

I suggest a membership also, but make a knife or two with help from here, then decide if you like making knives and want to be a part of our fun

Hey Rey, fastenal in McAllen can get you some O1 or A2 steel. Or get some from Texas Knifemakers Supply. By the way I live in Weslaco, and would be happy to help ya. I am new at this also but the guys here are great. Welcome.
