bought some s-35 from aldo and it's harder than a woodpecker's lips. anybody know what the approximate hardness is for pre-heated steel such as s-35,1095,etc. wondering how good a knife can be made w/o heat treat by you guys.

s-35 ?? Do you mean S35VN from Crucible ? It should be spheroidize annealed .Ask Aldo. 1095 should also be purchased as spheroidize annealed.

you guys never pass up an opportunity to bust somebody's chops. yes,i meant s-35 vn. so approximately how hard is it? excuse me for being ignorant on the subject. maybe someday i'll get there.

Are you talking about the "mill scale" on top of the steel, or the bare steel itself?

Mill-scale is a bitch to deal with, it will eat up belts and bits like crazy; pickling your barstock overnight in regular vinegar helps loosen it. Paying extra for precision-ground/surface ground stock is always worthwhile if you're a stock-removal maker.

I would be surprised if the steel itself isn't coming to you fully annealed; both Crucible and Aldo have excellent reputations for delivering good stuff.

Without proper HT? You may as well make it from low-carbon "welding" steel from Lowe's and save a few bucks. It will be junk either way.
