Steel/Hype?

Thanks all and mete.
Out cut, is what I meant by out perform.
BTW, I was referring to A2. I should have mentioned that.

Hi All. Back in the 80's, a well known maker told me that he tried all the SS available but nothing could out perform tool steel, so he stuck with it. I know the CPM's perform a little better than the older SS, but I do not think they can out perform tool steel. INFI and tool steel are still at the top of the hill, imo. What do you all think?

I think there is more than one heap. :)

The modern semi-stainless steels (or whatever one wants to call them) are revolutionary - no question. For some applications, S30V is as close as anything else to the top of the applicable heap.

For other applications some of the more traditional "tool steels" are better. For example, in my limited experience well-treated 01 out-cuts well-treated S30V. Of course that is not the whole story, though.

INFI is also revolutionary, but it is more of a jack-of-all-trades than a specialist. You have to consider toughness, edge-holding, stain resistance and keenness together in order to see the real value of INFI.

.223 and 9mm.
FWIW, on the Metro Razor that I ordered from Black Bear Knives, I went with CPM 154-CM over S30V.
