Neat looking etch Raymond! Model A leaf spring? Just a guess, I like it no matter what.
I get something very similar on blades I forge from those big RxR lockwashers. I edge quench and then etch for a long period in white vinegar. Had someone tell me once that they were caused by bubbles tracking during the etching. Called him on it by etching some horizontally and still got the same longitudinal grain pattern (boy, that was easy). The grain pattern follows the forging compression caused by reducing and drawing the tang out.

I had a simialr result from coil springs off a RR car. Left it in the etch a little too long but it turned out cool.

You know why you have never seen remains of the three ships at the beginning of this thread? Someone took all the nails and turned it into mascus.

Ig's belt buckle? He'd break his neck if that was the case.

Three years ago I went on a search for some shear steel and bought several old large lumbermill circular saw blades. Up untill a couple weeks ago I had believed I struck out on the shear steel. I had tested all those blades shortly after I got them and figured all I had found was just saw steel.
