I though it would be easier on Uncle to have a separate sheet for folks who may want to order one of these. If I am not mistaken, Yvsa, Steven F, and Jaeger expressed interest in the other thread but I don't know whether all should be considered firm orders.

Clicking on a thumbnail will open a window with a full size pic -- I hope.

Brian, is the handle long enough for comfortable use? I don't have "large hands" but find I sometimes need to "round" the handle's end - i.e. 15" AK, 12" & 15" Sirupati. WWII & BAS were just fine.

I just measured 4.25" against my "gripped" right hand & it seems "short". Possibly another 1/2" on the handle, and is that possible Uncle Bill?

Thanks.

Jon, it is a tad on the short side for a full 4-finger grip. However, a 3-finger grip with the pinkie curled behind the pommel is very comfortable.

It's not apparent in the pictures, but the rear of the handle is somewhat dropped. That is, the top extends further back & is straighter, relative to the spine, than the bottom of the handle. The top of the handle does not bite into my palm or the ball of my thumb. If this doesn't make any sense, maybe the following pic will help.

This is a "work-in-progress" picture of a 12" Sirupati handle that I modified. (I'll post more when I've finished its kydex rig.

) Although it doesn't have the hump in front of the butt plate, the Kumar Karda handle shape is similar.

I am in. When would they get here and do we pay up front?

Thanks Brian, appreciated. My 12" Sirupati isn't down that far yet, but it's headed that way

. I personally like a four finger grip on any knife that I'm going to use for anything more than opening a letter.

Uncle Bill, if these become a stock item you can sign me up for the first blem, where I won't feel bad about hacking up the handle in my attempts at modification - an expert horn or wood craftsman I'm not

.

You've welcome, Bill & Jon. I'm happy to help.

Jon, I think I should have stated my description of the handle a differently. Although I can get a 4-finger grip, I find the 3-finger more comfortable & more secure since my pinky behind the pommel can prevent my hand from slipping forward onto the blade.

The scabbard is of the typical khukuri leather covered wood type with frog & metal tip cover (chape?). The fit & finish on mine is excellent and the habaki style bolster locks the blade in securely & still allows for a smooth draw.

If I were to spec an improvement, it would be the frog. It is heavy leather and, when worn on a belt, unlikely to allow the scabbard to turn upside down risking the knife falling out. However, I would like to see it placed further up the scabbard, closer to the opening & COG. Also, it is nailed in place & together, rather than being sewn. I'll probably make mods to it myself at some point over the winter.

Brian:
Thanks much for the picture, it was worth a 1,000 words. Got out my Dremel Tool & took down the handles of my 12" & older 15" Sirupatis & 15" AK blem as per your picture & instructions above. All three had "short handles" (at least to my preferred grip) but seem comfortable now (haven't "used" yet).

Any suggestions on how to re-darken the handle where it was ground down?

Thanks again.

Jon, after using progressively finer sand paper by hand, I buffed the handle with a felt wheel on my Dremel using a Diston buffing compound. Unfortunately, the box of compound seems to be hiding so I can't be sure which I used. I do remember that it was one specifically recommended for horn.

Buffing brought back the color for me w/o having to use stain. If you do go the buffing route, work slowly & don't allow heat to build up. Good luck.
