Steel(s) to Avoid

Don't forget that knives were made for centuries out of the 1095 and when all is said and done, it is the best.
There are many tool steels which offer performance significantly superior to 1095 as they have a combination of higher wear resistance, toughness and ductility.

1.4111 is fairly similar to that, too.

Edit: sorry guys, I was mistaken. Victorinox uses 1.4110. 1.4111 is a much better steel, it's similar to 440C.

This is the information I received when writing directly to the Vic Co:

"The main supplier to the Victorinox Co regarding pocket knives is Ugine (France), Krupp/Thyssen (Germany), in smaller quantities also Böhler (Austria) and Sandvik (Sweden). Bonpertuis (France) supplies steel for the production of household and butcher knives."

In other words; the chosen steel may vary quite a bit, all depending on the current prices on steel stocks.
