Steel (S30V) Questions

OK, I have decided that I want to make a knife. The design I am thinking of is a really thin flat ground sheepsfoot (I think that is what I am thinking of, whatever the one that looks kinda like a bread knife only not serrated). Would S30V be a good steel choice? If so then how much would it cost for a 4 in (at most) really thin blade and where could I buy it?

Another thing I am curious about is how important annealing is. Would I have to anneal the steel? I have heard some say that aneealing is needed and others say that you just need to be careful not to get the blade too hot when grinding. Does that only apply to files and stuff or to steel I would buy?

Is there somewhere I can send my knife to have it heat treated? Is S30V easy to heat treat yourself?

Thanks,
Cody

ok some things right off the bat what will the knife be used for
i understand the shape but use can dictate thickness and steel + the heat treat used

now that said the bar or sheet steel you buy will come as soft as its going to get no need to anneal. while grinding before heat treat you realy dont have to worry much about over heat (i still dont like to get to red ) after heat treat then if you have to be careful
there are a few people that do the heat treating of s30v im not sure (i have a kiln and cryo stuff here in the sho)

you cant get a good heat treat on s30v without a kiln and some other gear
where are you from maybe we can find you a maker that is close and can help

Judging by your questions and the lack of information in your profile, all I can say is you need to read up on knife making a good bit more. Get several books. The newbies thread has a list.

OK, I didn't realize there was profile info that I had to add. On the other forums I go to that is set up with the account. It is added now.

I am planning on using it to cut smaller stuff. I almost want it more as a show knife just to show off how sharp it is on like soft food, paper, etc (like to push cut newspaper or tissues or something without ripping it). I will make another different knife for real hard use.

EDIT: Butch, I just saw you mention that you make super sharp kitchen knives in another thread. That is kinda the idea behind this knife. Sharp and thin enough to be used as a "look how wicked sharp my blade is knife" and also to be used in a kitchen knife type role. Maybe for whittling or other really light use things.

ok well then maybe you should take a look at cpm154 comes in many thicknesses takes a fine edge and is easy (relative) to work with (still have to send it out to get heat treated) and is a dream to finish

I just googled that and from what I saw it looks pretty good. Where do you buy yours from and how much would a 6 in. piece be? Also what thickness should I get, that would affect the price I presume.

Thanks,
Cody

i get right from crucible and th cost is by the Lb so yes thickness and size are importiant
you may what to get ahold of POPs or AKS knife supply to get just a liittle
if your looking for the size i got and its not much of it i can send it to you for little more then shipping hell if you want i could heat treat it too for you. way it lok s i ll be goigt o a show in ohio in OCT maybe meat up there(i still hav eot get my table set up and get stock ready for it

That would be really awesome if you could do that for me. I'll PM you once I check this with my mom and all (could be a couple of days). I'll take whatever size you have to give. Considering my limited budget, I can work my design around whatever size you have.

Where in Ohio is the knife show? If it's not too far I would definately like to go. A knife show sounds like it would be quite fun.

Thanks
Cody

EDIT: What would be a good cheap, easily available steel to practice grinding and stuff with. Preferably something I can heat treat myself so that I don't have to just throw it out or pay someone to do it for me.

O1 or 1084
there area few more but i hear many use theses and are also good starter steels(that let you make good knives
starting the known steel way will make you a better maker (you ll take more time with steel you pay for and you will know what heat treat to use )
