Steel similar to VG10

No doubt. When I hear terms like martensite, pearlite, austenite my eyes kind of glaze over. Someone in another thread called vg-10 a “cheap” steel, but exporting from Japan raises the cost. Whenever trade and market regulations/transportation costs factor into the final price, I prefer something made in the US, which is where I live. Which is why I rarely buy Japanese knives with
g-10 handles, since the increase in cost is due to the g-10 being shipped from us to Japan. I’m not knocking vg-10, I own many fixed blades and folders with the steel and love them, even really expensive fallknivens!

That other person was ignorant. VG-10 is neither cheap nor a poor performer.
Don't be silly. G-10 does not need to be shipped to Japan.

Would AEB-L be in the same field as VG-10 ???? I don't have a clue other than it's a fine grain, pure steel.
I also like CTS-XHP, for me, it takes a good edge, holds it decently and is easy to maintain.

Sal Glesser said they used American made g-10 on seki knives in a thread here some time ago, though I can’t remember the exact thread. He also said this raised the cost of g-10 handled knives produced there. I assumed we had a monopoly on the good stuff! And of course “cheap” is relative, I completely agree with you that vg-10 is a good steel!

"G-10" is fiberglass. The term derives from fiberglass used for circuit boards. Japan makes plenty of it. If Sal wants to send coals to Newcastle, that's his prerogative, but it's not a necessity.

I went to look for the thread, but got distracted. Doesn’t make sense if I read his post correctly!?!

Many Cold Steel folders are described in their ads as featuring "American G-10 " ? No idea why .:confused:

That’s what made me think, along with what I believe was a comment by Sal, that we had a trademark or something on g-10. If it could be made in China at a fraction of the price why would cold steel use stuff from the US?

To make patriotic sounding ads without having to actually make products in the US ?

I like s30v, as done by Spyderco in Golden, but I think it’s definitely a step up from vg-10 in terms of edge retention.

Let's say hypothetically you were making a $50 knife
;
American steel costs $1
-foreign costs $0.50

American G10 costs $0.17
-foreign costs $0.11

American Labor = $7.25
Foreign = $3.00

And shipping becomes negligible because you have global outreach, so no matter what you are shipping this and that from here there and everywhere.

MSRP = 50

You could make an all American knife for $8.42

or

foreign made = $3.61
-but, gonna have to take a hit on either US MSRP or on actual real time/real market actual sales at $50 "made in ?"

Or

$4.03 for "made w/ USA G-10"
(with unspoken international compromises made in every other aspect of the process to save a penny or earn a respect point here or there)

Now multiply that times x500,000?+

And all manufacturers go through that same generic process.

Apparently chinese manufacturing + shipping back is still worth the cost, because so many manufacturers keep doing it.

No one has mentioned BD1N. U.S. made and falls in line with VG10 both price point, edge holding and ease of sharpening.

BD1N ????
Who makes it and what knives have IT?

Thank you all for in put.
