I am new to the custom knife thing. Looking to start adding some to my hunting gear. Any suggestions on what kind of steel I should be looking for. Ideally I would like one that holds a sharp edge for a long time. It will be primarily be used for skinning and quartering game. Thanks in advance. Any other suggestions on what I should look for would be appreciated. Thanks.

look at the bark river knives I personally like the elmax but they have other steels,s35vn to 154cm. the elmax settles to a nice working edge.

Look for a respected maker...

As for what type of Steel to hold an edge, all the big names should do you fine from d2 to 3v, from 440 to elmax, provided the are properly heat treated, (hence why a respected maker plays a bigger role then the "type" of Steel)... You here stories of guys skinning 3 deer with a Buck 420hc before needing to sharpen it...

Contact Big Chris and have him make you a blade of 10v, CPM-10v was created by gods and infused with unicorn dust for added wear resistance. Well... not really, but its good stuff. Use a coarse DMT to sharpen and very few steels will be able to compare to its performance.

Well it's about as close as one can really get to it. :D

Do you know how to sharpen your knives? Can you keep them sharp while working with them? If so, pick the knife you like the best and don't worry about the steel used. You're good to go.

Thank all for the great responses. I think I am more confused now than before. Lol.
I looked up Elmax. Good things said about it. Well there was some good input here. Gonna look up info on the ones suggested and go from there. And a sincere thanks to all that took time to reply.

Be careful what steel you select if you're going to be using a fire steel for fires.
