So, I've made a few knives with O1 steel purchased on line. I'm out of stock and am wondering if I should try something different. I want to retain the ability to heat treat myself. (I have a small Evenheat oven that will heat to 2000 degrees.) So ease and forgiveness of heat treating would be a plus.

Any suggestions? Should I stick with O1 (which I've had pretty good results heat treating) or venture into something different?

Thanks.

I am using 1084 for a year and am super happy. It's super easy to heat treat. Now I have added 15n20 for kitchen stock. It's definitely a improvement just because if the resistance to rusting. These are my go to steels that I will always try to have on hand. 80CRV2 and 1075 are both easy as well though I have had just a little more problems with the heat treatment.
That's just my beginners outlook.

Having a HT oven that goes up to 2000F means you could even do stuff like AEB-L/Nitro-V stainless though you would want to shield them from oxygen with HT foil, use aluminum quench plates and compressed air for the quench, and probably need at least sub-zero with dry ice/acetone bath.

Thanks. Was wondering if there was a less corrosion prone steel that was as easily or more workable and easier to get a great finish. Just want to do the heat treat myself.
