Steel Supplier Question

I'm curious about different steel suppliers and products. Take Aldo 1095, for example, how would that be different from the 1095 that Jantz would offer and what makes it more desirable in the knife world?

I just ordered some 1084 from Aldo as it seems to be the only place I could find. Every other knife I've made was 1095 from Jantz or old files. I did make one knife from Aldo 1095 that Shiva gave me and couldn't tell the difference in anything other than the hammon, which came out to be the nicest hammon I've drawn out.

Aldo is more selective with his steels as far as purity and composition I believe and has the sales volume and pull to have steel smelted to his specs. Not that jantz or the others have poor steel. A lot of the smaller sellers are also getting their steel from Aldo and re-selling it on their own.

There have been concerns about mixed up batches of steel from some suppliers, or even crummy mill runs of steel. Aldo has a history of bringing in consistent steel. That's only one reason, cut in my mind it's enough. Too many horror stories of guys stuggling to heat treat some steel they just bought only to find out it wasn't what they were told it was!!!

Just as importantly, Aldo is all over it in the event of a problem. His customer service is so good its unreal.
