Steel supplier

Aldo,
If you are still checking this fine thread?

I can see the problem of inconsistency with Carbon steels but have you found the same level of problems with Stainless Steels like the CPM steels? I would think with defense, Aerospace and medical needs for Martensitic steels there would be a better level out there?

I am still a nob at knife making, but before I started I did research and then I did some more research. The name that consistently came up for quality metal was Aldos. I had nothing else to go on, but my research. After using his steel and continuing to here the good reports I am glad I did.

I once - once - had a problem with mislabeled steel from Aldo. Mistakes do happen, after all... When I called him and asked what was up, he was way more upset about it than I was.

The guy seems to genuinely care about his products and his customers.

He bent over backwards to figure out exactly what I had, including spending time with my HT guy* to make sure he could really nail it down for me, and make sure no one else got mislabeled stock. Aldo also replaced the steel in question at no charge, plus some.

That, friends, is customer service well above and beyond the norm. It's also dang smart business sense... I'm sure that time and steel cost him money in the short term, but he solidified my trust and now knows I'll go to him first, in the long term.

*Brad Stallsmith of Peters Heat-Treating... another guy who has helped me learn a great deal, and also cares a lot about his profession.

Same thing I found when I first started out was the name Aldo popped up everywhere. 99.9% of the time was positive so that sold me on his business. I have bought from Aldo and Alpha only. Alpha Knife Supply is another I like. Alpha does sell in smaller lengths and for guys starting out on fixed budgets that sometimes works better than buyin a 48" piece.
