steel to forge?

I am not the best guy to answer this. However, some steels are difficult to forge. Things like D2. Some that will work off the top of my head are 5160 1080 1095 01 W2. There are others as well.

Look at the specs on the steel as chrome content goes up so will red hardness. Red hard is a term that means that the material stays harder at red temperatures. That is why most stainless steels are hard to forge. Nickel and cobalt also effect the red hardness. You can still forge it. It will require more heat and force. I think that most commercial forging of this stuff use a controlled atmosphere heat source and a monster wackerer.
