Steel type SAK?

... So to my knowledge the best sak makers are wenger and victorinox. Could someone please tell me what kind of steel they use for their blades?

Technically, the only SAK factories are Victorinox and Wenger, although other factories (not just in Switzerland) produce similar knives. As for their steel, I've read it's some sort of mystery 420 stainless steel

Oh okay haha. I'm just trying to decide between a 301 and a sak and the first thing on my mind was steel type vs bucks 420hc

I thought I heard a while back that Victorinox bought out Wenger. Anyone confirm or correct this please.
Also, what other firms make similar knives?

Well, I don't think I step onto anyone's feet if I say that, talking about steel, Buck wins.
But, obviously, a 301 and any SAK are two very different things, so there are many other factors to consider.
Anyway, for some reason, I would bet that, sooner or later, you will get both

what SAK? I have a 301 and think it's wonderful, but I normally carry an alox SAK along with anything else. But either way, reasonably priced, great knives.

Haha well, I'm gonna ask someone for it as a gift so I wanted something that I can carry for a while.

Wenger was bought by Victorinox a couple of years back, but the manufacturing is still separate as it was before. It's like with cars, it's either a VW or a Fiat :p (or GM and Ford I guess?)

As for the steel, the major difference is the hardness. SAKs are around 56 HRC I believe, which is VERY soft and the edge rolls quickly. On the other hand it sharpens just as easily.
You'll get a SAK sooner or later, I mean the basic models only cost a few bucks.

Mmm.... Maybe the climber 2. Off the top
Of your head do you know which blade is thicker out of the two knives? I'm guessing th buck.

victorinox indeed bought wenger a while back, but the they still sell wengers. Vicorinox sells two types or sak's, wengers and victorinoxes
There is not much known about the steel, but in my experience it is comparable to 440c

I've got 5 SAKS (old Champ(before they had 5000 blades, 3.25 Tinker, Mechanic (my favorite), classic SD keyring)) and wife has 2 (old style standard, classic SD keyring); all Victorinox. Never leave home without one or two and always have one with me at home. Love them!

I'm pretty sure the Buck has thicker blades. The SAK is certainly thinner towards the tip because the whole blade is tapered (and the grind is much thinner too). If you want a SAK with a thicker blade there are the alox models.

Okay! Yeah I really would like a thicker blade just cause I think they make a lot better for adjusting grinds and such.

Are all the alox models bulkier?

I don't think so, but the pioneer range certainly is (Farmer, Electrician etc, check out the sturdy category)

And that's the difference:
