I have a guy wanting me to make a blade out of a transmission shaft from a 50's ford truck, I figure its like 4140 but being that old I'm not sure. Any guesses? When I get it I'll test a piece.

No guess at all....and I doubt anyone has a better guess.
Tell the chap you will make the knife if he will send a 2" piece of the shaft to a lab for testing. Then you will both know what the alloy is, and how to HT it. This isn't all that much extra for a custom knife.

Well, I thinks it more for sentimental reasons, If it gets hard at all It'll be good enough. Appreciate the comment
