Steel type

So I'm working on my first knife (have been for a while, but I don't have the right tools so it's taking a while) out of an old rusty Nicholson File that was laying around. Anyone know what type of steel that is? I've heard W-1 or W-2, I'd like to know for sure so I can look up the correct method of heat treating it.

1095 / W1 heat treat the same as they are the same... it's just one (W1) has a tool steel quality control on it. It's highly doubtful you got W2. Most of the time it's 1095 /W1. See the stickies for proper heat treat info (Hyper Eutectoid Steels)
