Steel types?

Thanks you guys. You brought up some real interesting facts and it is always an enlightening experience.

Joe is responsible for my first "real" knowledge of knife steels. Before I came here (BFs), I would buy a knife because of how it looked! Now I know a little more and can make better informed buying decisions. Thanks Joe!

Hi Gary,

The steels you list are all stainless. If you don't really need the stainlessness, many carbon steels will perform very well.

Among the stainless steels, many consider 440C to be the starting point for good ones. This means 440A, AUS6, AUS8, 440B, and 420HC are just not acceptable. Consider only 440C knives with good heat treatments, and better steels such as ATS34, BG42, VG10, S30V and a few rarely encountered others.

Jesus. Sometimes I think I'm actually starting to know a little bit about one of the things that I love the most in life, and then I read a thread like this and feel like I just walked into the world of knives all over again.

Hello, I just recently registered so I could post once in a while. This is a kind of test to see it works. In answer to the question of rating knife blade steels it has pretty much been covered already that the best steel for any particular knife depends on the application. I have written some articles on this subject in the past and they are on my website, which is new and not completely finished. www.seamountknifeworks.com. In any case it is a place to start..

Nice to see you here Phil!

Thanks, Vassili.
