steel used in remington knives

hello;

what type of steel was used in remington fixed blade knives? the knife in question is marked r-6 on the blade. thank for any input.

I think they use more than one but 440-A seems the most common. It is a good basic stainless knife steel with decent edge retention and toughness added. Much depends on how it is heat treated and I'm sure Remington has it down to a tee!

Remington knives made by Camillus have either 440A or possibly 420HC, depending when they were made. I think Cam. has switched over to 420HC for most new production, but I could be mistaken about the Rem. knives.

There are also some Chinese made Rems on the market(chi-rems?) and they don't say what stainless is used, only that its 400 series. Not sure what to make of chi-rems, or for that matter, chi-marbles. I guess it doesn't matter what I think, but it does seem that I better get used to it even if I don't like it.

In the old-school Rems, it feels like 1095. I've a Rem-Dupont model that gets some work.
