I was just watching ccn ( yeah yeah I know cutlery corner mostly sells crap )
And I couldn't believe what I was hearing " new carbon steel warriors " and as it turns out that they're now introducing them with titanium coated carbon steel blades ( as of right now they only have a few patterns and only with buffalo horn scales )

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the steel warriors might be made by rough rider. ( if so then we may soon see them in carbon steel as well )
I hate to say this, but CASE better step their game and fast. China is really starting to give them a run for their money.
( I still prefer case, because while I'm not ashamed to own them a Chinese knife isn't something I can have pride in )

I just saw them again and they're probably gonna cost about the same as the regular stainless ones do ( around 12$ ) I'm not sure where else you'd be able to find them, and currently they're only selling them in a set of 6 for 68$ . But I'm gonna check their website to see if they have them individually or not.

I've two steel warriors; the copper lockback and the primitive style horn handle. Neither come close to the quality of materials or workmanship of RR. I'll not be buying any more of them.

Error (failing memory) I was thinking of the two Old Forge knives recently purchased, not Steel Warrior.

The last time that I saw a Steel Warrior knife was probably 10 years ago but they were owned by Frost at the time. From what I understand, SMKW owns Rough Rider and Colt. Some of the Colt knives have been previously made with carbon blades and titanium finishes.

Case's quality is better. People may disagree but they're wrong. ;) Case will never be able to make knives for $10 shipped.

For fun I thought I'd share my experience with Steel Warrior... As I said, it was many years ago and so it may or may not be representative of their current knives. I received a blue Steel Warrior trapper free with a purchase. It was a surprise gift... I don't remember what I ordered or who I ordered from. Any how... I was excited to get the gift. I used it for something that required some cleanup and I rinsed the knife off. The blue dye from the bone handles turned the water blue.... and stained my hands blue. And stained the counter top blue when I set the knife down to try to remove the dye from hands! I haven't looked at their knives since then.

I know that they use cheap dyes in their handles that can run ( just like or does ) and that case is generally better ( but these companies are really stepping up their game )
And I know that case won't be making any 10$ knives ( I've actually seen the mini blackhorn on sale for 11$ before )
But I love the value of the rr and steel warrior knives, because you really get a lot for what you pay.

Tonight I picked up a Frost Steel Warrior trapper at a hardware store in a small town near me. There was a display case with a number of Frost knives under plexiglass, including a selection of slip joints: the trapper, a stockman, a peanut, a congress, a small toothpick and a few one-handers that held no interest for me. There was some additional stock in the back of the case. The clerk had some difficulty, first in finding the key, then in moving the case to open it. She said that nobody had ever asked to see the knives before. I have no idea how long that case may have been sitting on the counter.

I would have liked to give their stock a closer look, but the clerk was in an awkward position reaching into the case while she held up one end as the other rested on the counter. The knives were well-wrapped, too, in tiiue and inside a cellophane sleeve, which made it still more troublesome to look a lot of them over.

It took her a bit of rummaging to find a trapper in its box; after looking it over for obvious flaws, I took it, notwithstanding the somewhat unpleasant reddish tint to the scales.

The knife is pretty well put together; scales are flush with the bolsters, springs are mostly free of gaps, completely so after a little discreet pressing, and are flush both open and closed. The blades have pretty good snap and a reasonable pull. The construction is about on a par with the Case and RR trappers I had to compare it with. It does seem a bit drab by comparison, lacking a lot of the details that typify the RRs, and the jigged scales cannot compare with the smooth bone of the Case.

For a final test, I ran the Steel Warrior under the faucet. I didn't see red rye running down the drain, but a number of dark patches did appear on the surface of the scales. On balance, I can't say it was a bad deal at $15, but I would easily take a RR over it at the same price.

Carbon Steel? If it's true, I'll bet it's 1085 or 1075 Carbon Steel. I can't see them making quality knives for their price range. It just doesn't make sense. They just can't do it for the money.

Good to hear they improved the dyes. It still makes me chuckle when I remember that blue dye everywhere.

It could be interesting for carbon fans. But, the reason I like RR knives for example, is their stainless: it cuts well and retains well in use. RR knives are generally very well put together and I've got a few I would not want to part with. As for Steel W I got one about 5 years or so ago a small Copperhead, interesting pattern as it's 2 blades about 3.3" The tangs are properly under the bolster as they should be (some Queen knives don't manage this and I wonder what the point of a Copperhead bolster is then?) But the blades are very thick stock which seems off for a small knife, the bone is ok-ish but gaps with the liner and in my dry environment they've shrunk back a bit. Just failed to convince me and never felt like buying another, nor has what I've heard about this brand altered my opinion. The carbon could be good for those who fancy it, but if you have to buy a job lot of 6 knives that alone makes me suspicious about general quality......

I believe the dye coming off is a feature of Steel Warrior, so the owner can adjust the color to their preferences.

Steel Warrior Blue trapper --> $0 (free gift)
Carhartt pants stained by water saturated with blue dye --> $40
Expression on your spouse's face when she sees the blue stained countertop --> priceless ;) :p :D

Oh the price we pay for our passion! Too funny!

My wife would kill me. If I ever go silent, you will know it's knife related, and she found out about something. :D
Thanks, Neal

I've had a small lime green bone Steel warrior lockback for a few years without it staining anything, but maybe I've gotten lucky.
