Steel Warrior?

The closed length on the BSA knife is listed at 3.24". Without digging out the Colt, I'd have to say that it's about the same size.
Oops! I just saw the "2.5" Knife" in the "large print" and assumed that was the closed length, thinking to myself, "A scout that's shorter than a Peanut is really small!"

Thanks for fixing my misconception!:thumbsup:

Ha! Well heck, GT. Turns out we were both wrong.

I got to thinking about it and thought "Wait a minute, that Colt is bigger than 3.24 inches closed". I don't have time for a pic but I did dig out the Colt and sure enough, it's 3 5/8 inches closed.

I have twin nephews with a birthday coming up and thought maybe a pocketknife each would be a good gift as they'll be 12 and they do camp a bit and are scouts. I don't see them a lot and cash is a bit tight right now but I want to send them something decent without breaking my bank. Is Steel Warrior any good? It's supposedly made by Frost which isn't comforting but is also listed as 440 steel. I was think stockman style. Any advice appreciated.

I've experienced quality on par with rough rider, but maybe I've not been all that lucky with rough rider.

If you can swing it I'd probably get a $15 Victorinox recruit, but rough rider is a good value and Steel warrior being less expensive I'd say could be just as good of a value.
The bulldog brand now owned by frost can be equally is good of a value, but I've only had one which was actually better than I've ever experienced from rough rider.

I have a couple of Steel Warriors, a trapper and a peanut. They are not badly made, but not particularly pretty either. I prefer Rough Rider. If you are looking for an inexpensive camp knife, why not try the Marble’s version of the Camillus demo knife. I’d say it is at least as good as the original.

I have a pair of sodbusters so far, they're quite good, one red acrylic and a light blue bone. Steels said from Germany. Imho, RR is better quality, but they're decent knives.

"I have the Rough Rider utility scout knife (no scout emblem) and the can opener is next to impossible to open."
My RR Scout/Utility had the same issue.
I fixed it by rounding off one edge of the tang with a cheap diamond file.
Went from a 9+ pull to about a 7.
Still a lot stiffer than I prefer, but I don't need pliers to open it anymore.

I did not read the size on the official scout knife (2.5"). Too small; definitely the Vic Tinker IMHO.

I have a Rough Rider scout, but mine the can opener isn't hard to open at all. However it is an old style, and honestly I haven't used it yet. As much as I like it I also suggest a Victorinox SAK. My first knife was a Vic camper. I was in the scouts at the time, and my 3 most used tools, the main blade, the saw, the can opener in that order.

I want to add, any knife from Rough Rider is also a great choice especially if on a tight budget. Last Christmas I gave my Dad a Treebrand Boker, my nephew got a Buck 110, but I probably gave 10 Rough Rider's of different patterns as well. I was able to give some really good quality knives as gifts, without killing my limited budget.
