newbie here, just seeing what everyone's take is on their choice of steel width? 1 1/2, 2 inch...etc, is there a norm or is it dependent on the knife and or maker?

I would say its knife dependent, but i would think its less important if your forging since you can push the material out as you thin the bevel.

Yep, depends on what type of knife you want to make. Same goes for thickness. Personally, I'd start off with 1.5" width. Or if you have the money, get one of each... 1", 1.5" , and 2". I'd also suggest sketching out the type of knife you want to make, and that'd narrow down what you'd need as well.

I'd say that 1.5" is plenty for your average (straightish) small to midsized fixed blade. If it's on the larger side or has some curve to it, 2" may be the way to go. If you're unsure, I'd err on the side of larger.

I usually go with 9" x 1.5" x 1/8" for hunting knives. If doing folders, just 1". Chef's knives or Bowies 2".

1.5" allows for some curvature and drop to the handle butt. 1.25 is good for small straighter blades. 2" is only needed for large knives.
