I am too poor(cheap) to pay for 01 tool steel from a retail supplier. Does anyone know where I can find some for a more reasonable price? I am making Damascus with other types but nothing comes close to 01 in quality or appearance. I would also like to know if there is anything industrial that is made of 01 that I might find at a salvage yard. Any help would be appreciated.

Stryder - I believe planer blades are made from O1. Years ago I was able to get a bunch for free from a local sawmill.

The planer blades I've gotten have all been D2. I understand there's also some in A2, but I couldn't name the company.

Planer blades, huh? How big are they? And how do I regognize them and whether or not they are made of 01??

Oz is correct, planer blades are for the most part D-2 but you will find some blades made from A-2.
As far as getting O-1, try some of the industrial tool suppliers listed in the "Supplier's List" thread in the Shop Talk archives. Most of these folks like Wholesale Tool, MSC, J&L carry O-1. You will find O-1 to be fairly inexpensive comparatively.
