Hey everybody first off I don't want to be annoying so if this has been covered in another thread already please tell me the tread, but I was really needing to know

the steels I want to work with are the 10 series steels but I do not know where I can go to find them because none of the hardware type stores I have been to have any 10 series steels

so my question is two-fold

1) what stores sell 10 series steels preferable everything from 1010-1095 so that I can use them for regular blacksmithing and for bladesmithing.

2) are there any other standard specification that the 10 series steels go by.

thank u so much please reply when you can thanks.

New Jersey Steel Baron or just google it up and the world will open up to you . No hardware stores will sell it .

see, the problem is that for the most part, any stores I find online that sell 1095 steel doesn't sell other steels that I want to get like 1010 or 1020
and I would prefer not buying from multiple different companies

Many hardware stores now sell mild steel which would be fine for
smaller blacksmithing projects. It's comparatively expensive to
but it that way though.

Dillion,
When starting out, you want 1084 steel. Aldo, at NJSB has it if he hasn't sold out. Other suppliers like Chuck at Alpha sell it, too. You won't find knife steel at local stores. it is all ordered and shipped. 1084 is very reasonable. A secong good starter steel is 1075. It doesn't come in as many sizes as 1084. The other starter steel is 5160. It is a forgiving steel in HT.

The answers to all your questions so far is in the Stickys. I would suggest you read as much of them as you can. The custom serach engine in the stickys will also find answers to you questions.

I have tried to help you out through email, and was planning on sending yo some steel and other materials. However, I have asked you to have one of your parents contact me first, and you haven't. Check my last email to you and then the ball is in your court.

15n20 is an option that is relatively forgiving in heat treat. It benefits from precise control and a short soak, but you can get pretty good performance with basic equipment. I tested a piece of 8670 from AKS, and it heat treats at about 1550f. It seemed forgiving in heat treat. It's not very expensive either.

Get the mild steel from the local metal supermarkets or equivalent.

There's really not going to be a one stop shop for every kind of steel you want to buy. Somewhere like McMaster-Carr will come close I suppose, but you're gonna pay a premium vs a dedicated steel supply.
Aldo and Chuck are probably the two top steel suppliers for knife making steel. For Mild steel (1018/A36), you should try finding a local scrap yard or fab shop. A lot of them sell drops (cut offs) at or below scrap value. A local steel supplier might be the next best option. Hardware stores often have a (VERY) limited selecting of "weldable steel", but you often will pay a little bit of a premium for it as well.

Amazon and eBay are also options, but prices are all over the place. Sometime you can get a decent price on certain types of stock though.

Well like I said I would prefer to stick with the 10 series steels at least for now and I would obviously prefer to get it as cheap as I can, I would prefer to get square stock and round stock for the most part but maybe some bar stock to .

Can y'all just let me know what the best places to buy it would be, and let me know if the place you name is an actual store or if it can be bought online.

Several suppliers have been named already. What more do you need?

Do a google search for local steel suppliers or local fabrication shops. If you have larger cities nearby, that would probably be a good place to search as well.

OnlineMetals.com or SpeedyMetals.com are always options. I buy aluminum and some steel from midweststeelsupply. A lot of larger online suppliers will have price matches to other online stores, but again, picking up locally, especially if just drops or scrap, will be much much cheaper.

I'm not from NC, so I can't be of much use. If you start calling around to some local shops, one of them is bound to have what you're looking for, or at least be able to suggest somewhere else to look.

Dillion,
I heard back from your mother, so we are good to go.

I will put together a package of steel and stuff for you. 1084 and 5160 are good starter steels.

We can talk about your forge build by email.

Is JT still selling 15n20? I know he was for a while at a good price. I tried to email him but didn't get a answer. If he is, it might be a good place. There are several of us starting up right now and all asking the same questions. Let us know what you get and where. It will be fun to see how we all grow.

It's pretty cool that you are getting help from Stacy. There aren't many places that the best in the trade will give back to the community so freely. It's a rare privilege.
