Steeling steel

I was unable to find anything about the type of steel one could use for a smooth steel in the archives, does anyone have any info. Carbon v. stainless or specific hardnesses needed?

Use O1 drill rod and polish it first, then harden and don't temper it at all -- you want it at full hardness.
