Gentlemen:
For your consideration is this Field Grade Drop Point Hunter in CPM-3V/Green Canvas Micarta. This is my rendition of the Loveless Dropped Hunter - the blade is wider/thicker, the handle is wider, the blade is bit pointier, and the cutting edge drops below the ricasso - this is a big knife for a big hand. When it's 16 above zero and the deer blood is freezing on my knife, I want a big knife that I can easily hold without it waving around in my hand like a clapper in a bell. This knife is finished to 400 grit satin and buffed with black hard cut on a spiral sewn wheel for an even (as you can get on CPM-3V) finish. I designed this knife for a user with big hands.
Lately, some potential clients have asked me what the difference is between Field Grade and Presentation Grade. My Field Grade knives are satin belt finish with less expensive handle material. The same attention to detail in the execution of the knife is applied to a Steingass Field Grade knife as to the Presentation Grade knives: tight joints, even grinds, smooth solder joint, scales tight on the tapered tang, etc. I recommend CPM-3V tool steel for its toughness and superior performance for MY Field Grade knives, hard use bowies, and fighters. There are more wear resistant steels out there but that comes at a cost - they're more susceptible to chipping. Also, I may have to use five or six belts to grind it and there is not a corresponding increase in performance for the extra price I have to charge the client. CPM-3V is a great tool steel - it's moderately corrosion resistant and you steel snobs out there love it. I heat treat my CPM-3V for maximum toughness and yet soft enough so it won't chip easily and the user can sharpen it. I just built a fella a CPM-3V version of my Big Ol' Camp Bowie ...... what a knife! This is what I recommend for MY clients and what I perrsonally use, so please don't jump my bones about YOUR steel of choice in this thread.

No sheath yet so you may specify R or L hand vertical - I can build a horizontal sheath for an additional $25. I hope you like it! The first "I'll take it," PM, or email gets it. $300 delivered CONUS. Paypal preferred to tksteingass@frontier.com. This knife is also listed on my website.
