Although I have never worked with either of the these two "metals", has anyone ever done a comparison of the two? We are talking about shelling out some relatively big bucks for the material alone.

Has anyone ever done a comparison of the two?
Rob? Deloro Stellite? Anyone? Any takers?

Thanks to the generosity of a forum member I will have the chance to do so soon. Since the blades are not mine I will not be doing any work to examine the gross durability or strength of the knives. However I will be doing a lot of cutting and looking at various aspects of this comparing Stellite, Talonite, Boye's dendretic materials, CPM's as well as regular steels like D2.

If there are particular aspects that you are interested in then let me know and unless it could cause functional damage to the blades I should be able to do it.

I have used stellite 6k for over 15 years. Just started using Talonite- which is stellite 6b with some sort of age hardening thrown in. I can tell you that 6k is MUCH more difficult to work than the Talonite i have been getting from rob. the bark is especially hard to get off (I dont have a surface grinder) Butch Winter told me many years ago that he broke the tip off a 6k knife cutting a chicken bone, and from what i can see i will go along with that, 6k is somewhat more brittle than 6bh, but probably holds an edge better because of its increased wear resistance. I have done NO testing on my own...the knowledge that i have comes from grinding the stuff and talking to my customers who, for the most part, use the knives in the field on wild animals that they have shot. One thing for sure...the stuff will NOT rust.

Tom,

I believe some tests already have been done and 6Bh (Talonite) won out over Stellite in edge retention too. Here again my understanding is effective cutting edge not burr alone was the criteria. The age hardening was attributed as the factor making the difference.

It'll be interesting to see what Cliff comes up with.
