Is there a good source for inexpensive step pulleys out there that people might recommend? Epay has a few sites but not sure if quality is decent or not for a 2x72 grinder? I've toyed w/turning my own but that seems to be a big step to taker in my limited lathe experience? Sorry for the bad pun! Any folks out there have any sitting around for a 5/8" shaft they might like to sell? Thanks! Don

I bought mine at McMaster-Carr. They're decent, but not balanced well. They were inexpensive.

You can buy cheap aluminium ones from the hardware stores

Maska sells good ones, but they are expensive

If you have the chance to turn them, give it a try
You will end up with a good well balanced pulley at a fraction of the Maska ones

Broaching the keyway is the most difficult, but you can do that on the lathe too.

I would use steel and make each step separately

Broaching- but buying broaches will cost a couple-few hundred

Thank you guys! Great info! I have access to lots of Large Dia Aluminum cut offs and a lathe so maybe I'll give it a try to make my own! Looks fun! I turned my own wheels and they turned out nice so maybe giving this a try isn't out of the question. I figured that instead of broaching for the keyway, I'll just drill through one or two of the belt ways and simply use a set screw into the keyway? Thanks for the help! Don

Check out the last link, using a 3/16 toolbit and a boring bar, it works out pretty well, .001 per pass and you can do it in 94 really fast passes.

THAT was cool! Loved how he used the lathe in a non traditional way! Thinking outside the box! Thanks for the links to those video's, great stuff!
