Step up and place your vote! Which one?

Save yourself some dough and buy a new Spyderco Endura, ~3.9" blade, VG-10, and not as scary or delicate as a Civilian which isn't even warranteed for utility use.
Also fully ambidextrous :)

Hmm, I had kinda soured on the Sifu but that's encouraging. As far as I know, it's legal in my municipality. Weight and profile aren't such a big deal since it'll mostly ride in my backpack.

My regular EDC will be a custom Firebrand by David Winch coming in at 4 in., a Kershaw Scallion for small jobs...and maybe a BM 722 or Griptillian just to have.

In my bag, which is also a BOB and my toolkit for work, I'll have a small fixed like a Strider WP or Buck/Strider Solution. I know it's overkill, but I'd rather be well done than medium rare. A large folder would complete the World War III ensemble. So far, it's the 710 and AFCK in front with the TOPS a close second, the Strider falling back and the Sifu gaining.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I'll probably order it tomorrow evening.

Your final choice should depend on what you want to do with your knife more; defense or utility. This is the plain and simple way I look at it.

Great at utility, Ok for self self defense= BM 710

Great at self defense, Of for utility= BM 806D2(Axis AFCK)

REKAT Sifu. One of mine goes everywhere with me on a daily basis.:).

I guess you should decide on size. The TOPS and the SIFU are BIG. The Buck/ Strider and the TOPS are wide. If those are not too much of a concern big knives can do everything a smaller one can do and do a little more.

Also if your keeping "TABS" a friend and forum member sitting next to me also recommends the Green Sifu. This has been an on-going debate both of us can agree that the SIFU is awsome, but Red is better than green in my opinion:D

buy yourself an opinel and use the money left over to get a clue.

why ask others what YOU want?
Because then you will have a knife THEY want, instead of what makes you happy.

you know what you want.
get it.

A good Sifu is going to be the best defensive folder you can get this side of $150, but if you get one make sure to test the lock regularly. It's also a little big for most utility tasks.

For general use (utility and defense) you really can't beat a 710 or Axis AFCK. Decide between them based on which fits your hand better and which opening device you're more comfortable with. I own both and can't decide which I like better.

I own an LCC, Sifu, and Commander. I've handled a Strider and Civilian. Out of that group the Sifu is easily my first choice for defense. I own two and one of them goes with me everywhere except for work (where there is a 4" blade limit). The Sifu isn't just big, it is strong, beautifully balanced, and has an outstanding grip.

The Commander would be my second choice. It's grip and blade shape have a lot in common with the Sifu. The Wave also makes it the fastest folder there is from pocket to presentation. The Commander is what I generally carry to work. :)

First off whoever it was that said the Spyderco Civilian is a liner lock is wrong. Its a lock back. Also since you cant stab with it its unlikely even a liner lock would fail. Lock backs have been around a long time and in this knife I am sure would not fail you in use. Second, I consider any folder only a slasher in self defense. If you go around routinely stabbing into hard material with a folder, your going to be picking up your fingers one day. That said the LCC is a beautiful knife, fit and finish are great, its almost a custom. One that I would pick that is not on your list that fills all requirements is the Spyderco Chinook. Under 110.00 bucks too. Rock solid, very strong lock, neat blade shape with great cutting ability that can be used for utility as well. Heavy knife, but not as big as the full size Buck STrider. Pocket carry is easy in jeans.

First off, thanks for the feedback. I got exactly what I wanted from this thread and will hopefully make a purchase by tomorrow. For the curious, it will probably be the lefty Sifu in the forums if it's still available since it seems fateful. It'll be hard to turn down the 710, but I'll probably pick one up later this year.

Maurice, I know what I want, and I know what I'm looking for. That's why I did research and formed a list of contenders. If you had read a bit closer, I was looking for overall impressions since I cannot personally handle any of these knives save for the Commander. To give you a "clue," the only Benchmade products the local B&M had were the 690 and 940. Based on what people had to say about the Sifu, it seems my initial "clueless" impression of it was pretty spot on. This forum is a database where people can share information to augment what they already know and help them out when they don't know everything about knives. There's no reason for you come in and be antagonistic and condescending. Keep your Opinel.

Thanks for the help,

Okay, fair enough.

Next time I poll for opinions for help I'll clearly state "Please be a decent human being and practice common courtesy. Please don't be a dick." I guess I'm the ass for assuming that courtesy should be common.

I didn't mean to step on any toes for having the gall to ask for opinions in a public forum! What the hell was I thinking!? God, and I'm not the only one! They should shut this place down! It's full of people wanting to make an educated purchase! Idiots!

Love,
