What does it mean when a knife is described as sterile?? I see this sometimes on the knife exchange but Im not sure what it means.

A sterile knife is one that has no maker or manufactures mark on the blade. Unless you know your knives you dont know who made it or where it came from.

To expand on Keith's reply just a little, a sterile knife has no markings ANYWHERE. When buying a sterile knife for the purpose of collecting, it is always a good idea to get some sort of certificate of authenticity, detailing materials and with the makers mark or signature. This can be somewhat important if you wish to resell this piece at a later date.

Sterile blades are frequently used by military/ government operatives when overseas and perhaps abroad. As already mentioned it is undesireable to have any markings or indications of its origins. Unfortunately, BGs have been known to use them as well.
