Let's say your in the middle of nowhere, and you just skinned a deer with your trusty SAR4 and it's the only knife you have at the time. Now let's say you wanted to use this blade for eating as well, would boiling the satin blade to sterilize it do anything to the INFI like discoloring it or messing with the heat treat?

Inquiring INFI minds want to know....

No, heat treatments are done at much higher temps than 212f IIRC. I always boil my blades after doing any game cleaning, which is why I prefer micarta scales on those type knives. Place, not drop!, the knife in point first into warm, not yet boiling water, and bring the pot to a rolling boil. I allow the knife to cool down in the water until the steam stops coming off the water, then remove and dry the knife. I then Ren wax it and sheath it. Never had an issue with any of my knives.

If you have soap just wash it, thats all it needs.
Don't think it could hurt INFI if you did boil it though.
With deer if I had just water I would feel fine with it. On the other hand with Hog it would need to be washed very well.

I had a Busse sent to IonBond to be coated for a Buyer... I questioned them about their treatment and would it affect the heat treat because the treatment required temps to reach 425 degrees for a period of time and was reassured that even this temperature doesn't come close to the temps reached during heat treatment of knife steel :thumbup: You could boil that puppy for a week, and as long as the handle could take it, so can the steel without hurting the heat treatment on it. :D

EDIT: forgot to add... I have no idea what the safe range is for micarta & G-10. The handles were removed before the knife was treated with Diamond Black, a diamond-like carbon coating from IonBond.

Rambo didn't boil his knife before eating the hog he killed with his hollow handle LILE.

LOL :p

HT on INFI (from a post made by the boss) is in the 800°+ so it should be completely safe.

I would say the G-10 is the choice there. G-10 does not absorb liquids, micarta does.

I put my ASH1 in the dishwasher all the time, no problems. Probably only gets up to about 80degC though. Man it comes out clean!

you had an INFI blade done in DLC? I love DLC on 1911s...

have any photos of that knife after the fact?

</short thread drift>

Yes, here's one. I wanted to cancel the sale when I got her back! :eek: :D It's a FBM proto clip-point and it turned out really well. I hope the new owner doesn't mind this sneak peek!! As a funny side note that I'm sure Busse owners will appreciate... When I returned a call to IonBond to ask how it turned out, the lady on the phone said, "Oh, you mean the BIG knife?" :D lolz!! ...Apparently Ryan Flynn, their resident custom shop/gunsmith guy (A really nice gent!) brought it up to the office and showed it around before packing it up to send out. Sweet looking, yes? It reminds me of the Busse old school smooth black coating, and I'm thinking about selecting a few of my designated user Busses to send down for the same treatment for myself in the future. :thumbup: #27 SFNOLE is on this list. :)

OK, sorry for the thread hijack, now back to the topic at hand!! :o

Pour some booze on her:thumbup:

Not as effective as you think.

Warm soap and water is a better disinfectant than alcohol.

For any disinfectant to be as effective as possible, the knife should be clean of any organic matter (dirt, shit, blood...) so washing first is always a must.

If you just drop a bloody knife in boiling water, or add alcohol to dry blood, you've fixed it on there and made it even harder to clean.

(blood smears on glass microscope slides are fixed onto the slide with heat)

Warm soap and water is a better disinfectant than alcohol alone.

For alcohol to be it's most effective, it should be at 70%;
which means you have to use some really strong stuff.
(70% is even more effective than 100%)
-It works against bacteria by drying out the cell membrane.

If your heart is really set on using the booze;
-wash with soap and water
--cover it in your booze
---light it on fire.

It won't take as long as boiling water over fire and it's more fun.
(and no it's not hot enough to affect heat treat)

One of the advantages of a SAR4 is that the blade can fit into my mess tin for boiling it....but hot soap and water is enough...you sometimes though have sap and resin stains which take a fair bit of elbow grease to remove them if your working with only one knife. A bit of wire wool or a harsh nylon scourer is a useful thing to add. Also learning which plants give natural soap and antiseptic in their resin is useful....there are a good many out there and heating a leaf infusion of these works not just for cleaning the knife but also for your mess tin as well.:thumbup:

If you are skinning a deer with your SAR4 I am calling the game warden on you! :eek: It isn't deer season. ;)

One thing i use after cleaning/skinning animals is the antibacterial hand gel. The alcohol in it works very well on removing blood and it also sterilizes. Give it a shot...:thumbup:

What about if I want to sterilize the Gifted Badger so I can cut SofiBelle's umbilical cord? :D
