Steve McQueen

McQueen was definitely one of the greats. Thanks to celluloid/video tape, and now, dvds, we can still enjoy his movies.

Although the thread is probably about dead, I was thinking yesterday... Wasn't Steve in an episode of 'The Twilight Zone'? The story line was of him accepting a bet from a supposedly rich man that his Zippo would light every time for ten times? And he was gambling one of his fingers against cash?

Interesting ending, anyone recall that woman holding up her own hand?

Phil (obviously older than dirt).

Yeah that was Steve and the woman was his first wife.

Met Steve in the mid 60's.
Raced against him in the Barstow to Vegas off road race.
Told me he liked my BSA(Catalina Scrambler)
He rode a 650 BSA twin of his own design.(single carb)
Blew me away.
Tried to buy his Brough Superior at a motorcycle auction in 1982 after his death. Was about 2k short.
Met him and Allie Mcgraw after he and Mcgraw made Getaway in Northern California.Never forget his smile.Great human being.Great actor.

Agree with all of the above about Steve McQueen. Still love the chase scene in Bullitt.

Somehow the Fast and the Furious style race scenes just don't give me the same rush as watching those old muscle cars in action. Don't suppose they used a Hemi-Charger when they made the movie...........?..........Mopar...............!..............

It's possible - Bullit was released in '68. The Hemi Charger goes back to '66, IIRC.

Papillon is one of my favorite movies. Blow the mind to realize that it's based on a true story.

Hell is for Heros is my favorite of his. Glad his films are being ressurected for DVD.

Wasn't Getaway filmed in Central Texas?

All of us McQueen fans have surely seen the commercial for the new Mustangs with Steve McQueen in them, but here's something I heard on NPR a few weeks ago.

The designer of the new Mustang was interviewed, and he said that in designing hte new version, they wanted to stick to what really made the car recognizable, hence the long hood, short rear end, retro tailights, etc. But the also wanted the car to sound good, so they digitized the soundtrack from Bullitt, then tuned the pipes so that they sound like McQueen's 1968 Mustang.

Here's the link. The interview where he talks about the exhaust is available there as well.

It was Alfred Hitchcock Presents , The story was "The Man from Rio" Peter Lorre was the guy with the hatchet and the bet was for Lorre's Car.

Check out "Four Rooms" Quenten Tarentino, Bruce Willis, and Tim Roth kinda play out the same bet only funny.

Can't forget his first starring role in "The Blob". I was young then and the special effects were phony but nevertheless it was a scary movie for an impressionable kid.
