Steven Dick magazine article on Premium Stockman Knives

The big 4 1/4" Premium Stockman slipjoint knife is my favorite pattern. This is due in part to an article written by Steven Dick. I believe it was Blade Magazine. It would have been in the 1980s. They used to have a short one or two page article near the end of the magazine. I simply remember him discussing the usefulness of the pattern, the size, blades, etc. He showed a picture of a Buck Creek Large Diamondback which helped launch my collection of Solingen, Germany made knives. I have had no luck searching online. Any information will be appreciated. I would love to have a copy of the article to go with my knives. Thank you.

What many people will not have known is that Steve Dick's inspiration to become a outdoors writer was from the late John Jobson, whose book "The Complete Book Of Practical Camping" covers knives and also speaks highly of a Stockman knife. He writes "The best all-around outdoor pocket knife is the design somewhat loosely referred to as the stockman's knife".

I still have a hardcover copy of that book...among many others of the type from back in the day.
 
I think you meant to say Tactical Knives magazine.

They haven't been in print for over a decade now.

But there is a new online version.

It turns out the article in question was about five years before I picked up any of the knife magazines back in mid-1995.

Steve Dick was associated with Blade earlier on.
 
His book, "The Working Folding Knife" has a large section on Stock knives that runs 2-3 pages, that might be a good substitute.

Gun Digest owns Blade now, they sell good pdf scanned issues singly, or a collection of all issues that goes from 1973-2022 for $80.

I believe the article you are looking for is in the May/June 1990 issue of Blade Magazine. It is called "The Three Best Knives in America: one writer's opinion" by Steve Dick. There are several paragraphs about "a premium stockman in the over-4-inch-long-closed range" and there is a picture of a Buck Creek Diamondback on the second page of the article.

That sounds like it. Did you find the actual article anywhere?
 
My friend, you have just made me very happy. I was just thinking how I can't believe Bladeforums has survived. So many other forums disappeared with the advent of Facebook Groups, Instagram, etc. This is just one example of why I am still a member. When John Larsen chimed in above, I immediately recognized his name and the history of Steven Dick and John Jobson. I would read and reread those magazines. My Mom subscribed to Knife World for me when I was in my early teens. I even had some questions answered on some old knives I had in one of the columns. I'm afraid much of this knowledge is already fading away. And might be lost to history before too long. Thanks everyone.
 
We're not going anywhere while there are still members, makers and dealers who are willing to support the site financially, and a volunteer staff to help run it on behalf of the owner and membership who have stuck it out all these years.
 
This is going back a long time. That article seems familiar to me but I couldn’t recall the author or publisher. I think i read it from an old barber shop magazine rack back in the 1990s . I’ve always been interested in the stockman pattern since I was a little kid. And the bigguns get me excited. 😆

I finally got a large 4.25 Buck 307 wrangler a few years ago after years looking for a good specimen. It is the kind of knife that makes you feel well equipped for just about anything. I missed out on a few other big stockmans that I really liked but I wasn’t quick enough to pounce on them. I do prefer the good stainless steel ones as I’ve had some bad rust experiences with the carbon steel ones. I know some folks don’t want to carry that large of a knife in pocket but with a sheath it makes it more manageable. For everyday carry I like the medium size around the 3.25 - 3.8 depending on what im doing. Anyway thanks for posting this. I’m going to try and find it.
