Bill,

As I recall at the time, you did not have a problem with my chiming in, but David did, a bit.

There are more than a few makers and sheath makers that will absolutely attest that I can be a pain in the ass when I know what I want, because my aesthetic senses are very developed, and sometimes it pushes the maker to go in a direction that is counter to their natural flow....invariably in the last few years, the results have been, of course imo, outstanding.

Doesn't mean I'm right though!

You posted your knife, I'll not comment.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I did not want to derail the thread this came out of, but I can attest that STevie can sometimes come very close to being a pain in the ass over having everything just exactly the way he envisions it should be.....and for me this has turned out to be a good thing in many cases.

It all started many sheaths and many months ago when I got the first call and the first order from Steven. I sent him the sheath and then came the phone call back and the long discussion about I would prefer this and that.

The short version of this story is that as I changed the little "this and thats" for STeven, many if not all of the changes became the new routine way to design and make a sheath for anyone, so in the end....Thanks!!, STeven for being such a pain in the ass.

Paul

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the shout out.

I've commissioned 5 leatherworkers over the years, and you are by far the best I have ever seen.

If this is a Steven roast I am definately in.

When I first started posting here STeven reached out to me and questioned some of my thoughts and decisions.

At first I thought what a wacko but in time a very solid friendship avolved and I saw what he was trying to do was broaden my spectrum and teach me things I thought after 20 some years in the knife collecting world I knew.

His insight and thoughts have helped me see a different side of the knife world and I can say I have gained a much better understanding of certain things than I would have ever grasped on my own.

We still do not agree on everything but Steven is a loyal good friend the type you do not have to agree on all things with and it still does not tarnish the friendship. This is what a true friendship is in my mind.

Thanks Steven for the guidance and the wisdom and I believe you are one of the most valuable players out there. But like Paulie said you really are a pain in the ass somedays:D

(LOL)..Yup he's a PITA sometimes because he thinks
deliberately, and challenges others to do likewise...

Thanks, Joe....my wife would agree with the "pain in the ass" part.:D

I try to work with makers who are accomplished, and have their own "look", and get something that is unique for me.

I do try to be very clear as to why I prefer specific elements, and it is not for appearance only.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I haven't met STeven, but for a few years now, I have been learning from his contributions to the forum.

When I see his ID on a new post, it causes me to read it:D

I would have to agree on what STeven has done to "help". A few years ago i went to the ABS Expo in Reno as a new maker, not a table holder. I viewed it as an opportunity to have some established makers and collectors review my work and get some input on improvement. As you can guess he had no problem pointing out what was wrong with my work. Now i had an opportunity at that point to just give up or use the constructive criticism to improve what i did. I feel that he is one of the few collectors out there that doesn't blow smoke. He will tell you what he personally doesn't like about a knife or a style honestly. I do appreciate that fact.

STeven's been in this game a looooong time. He's learned a lot and has both very strong and very specific preferences born of that experience. He's no politician - and I mean that as a compliment.

Steve has definitely influenced both us an organization, and myself personally with regards to his, IMO, brilliant insight (yes, I said it :)).

Steve brought the Kershaw/RJ Martin relationship together, and has pushed my eyes to see in directions I haven’t thought of before. In retrospect, he’s made me a better knife person through his perspective.

Despite his rugged style (which one may or may not appreciate], I really believe the community is quite fortunate to have Steve’s knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. I don’t believe I’ve ever met anyone in this industry that can see knives like Steven does. Even after years of hanging out, he always trips me out with an evaluation of a random knife.

I know I will continue to lean on him in the future.

I'm blushing(seriously).

All of your checks are in the mail, appreciate the kind words, truly not expected and really humbling.

I've been truly blessed to know many of you and call you friends....and look forward to many more years of having that opportunity.

Don Fogg, Phil Baldwin and my business partner P.A. Stephens, as well as Thomas Welk have really influenced me to be confident in what I see and share it with others....to never be afraid of having a viewpoint, even if it ran counter to "the group"....

I'm trying to be "better" about presenting this viewpoint, so people will listen, rather then getting defensive or angry.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Okay, who are you and what have you done with STevie?

Paul

Although Steven and I have often head butted each other on this forum, I feel that a page has turned.

Over the past few months, I've mostly admired what words have flowed from your computer, Steven, and if all goes well we could meet at Blade this year.
I greatly welcome the opportunity to meet you face to face. Even though we haven't got on well for the most part here in the forum, there isn't much to convince me that we wouldn't get along in real life.

I like 'death rides' too:)

:D

Seriously, I think STeven can be abbrasive, rude and what not...but he is also the guy I learned most from when it comes to evaluating knives (style, fit & finish) although we have met only once at Blade 2008. How...by reading his posts and although we don't agree on everything I always find wisdom in his remarks. Well...almost always;):D So I'm really looking forward to the new and improved STeven.

Mr G knows what he likes, and is very set in his view towards those things

I think it is one of his best qualities..........however, he sometimes does put his foot in his mouth.......He will mellow with age, believe me!!!! :)

Its funny, most of the time when STeven makes his "rude" or "abrasive" remarks, I tend to actually think he is right. Its clear how smart he is and has a great eye for design. When he says, "nice knife but the blade should be half an inch longer" he is probably right. I like the dude.

Wow why am i sitting here praising you STeven? :)

A funny thing I have found is I need to really check the words I use with you because if there is anything that leaves me vulnerable, you will rip right into it.. I kinda like that.

Keep up the fun and keep sharing your wisdom.

oh yes, steven can be a real bore. i felt like strangling that bloke many times. but it's like getting used to gorgonzola cheese. you have to learn to appreciate it...

steven is a good egg, a very good one! i'd even say that i am a bit proud to know him personally!

arghh, bloody kumbayah threads :o :D

At first, a long time ago, Steven and I clashed... Then we
became friends... Now we really appreciate each others
capabilities...

I personally really like the man, his vast knowledge
and his phenomenal memory....

I also like this thread....

See you in Atlanta, my friend!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

but it's like getting used to gorgonzola cheese. you have to learn to appreciate it...

Hans, I love gorgonzola, as much as I like roquefort, cabrales, saint agur, vacherin mont d'or and so on and so on;):D

Let me get in on this dogpile. :D

STeven posts and I ALWAYS read what he has to say.
I have been suitably impressed with his knife knowledge from day 1.
I don't know him personally but hope to meet someday.

I'll probably miss his abrasiveness if there is a new kinder, gentler STeven debuting
but hope he still pushes folks to expand their knife knowledge and interests.

Good thread, Paul !
