STeven's influence

Since I was part of that issue that helped start this thread, I'll come on and throw in my 2 cents worth. Yes, STeven is at times an . . . irritant. However, I believe he has a wealth of knowledge about custom knives to go with his strong opinions, and he is an asset to our industry/hobby (however you look at it). And if he's trying to present his views in a manner that is more constructive and less irritating it's even better.

STeven, we got off on the wrong foot last year. I really do appreciate you starting the thread on me and my work. I hope that while we may not always see eye to eye on designs and such, we can still get along and respect each other. I'm looking forward to meeting you some day.

since we're on the topic of Mr. Garsson, what's up with the capitalized T?

Caps button, just kept it as a hallmark instead of backspacing all the time...no big mystery.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Jimmy Fikes once asked me that too, STeven.
Now we know.
Sorry for the slight drift. :o

And all along I thought it was an homage to Bill Moran's ST-24! ;) :D

I have to say I really appreciate STeven's viewpoint on both aesthetics and utility, and he can always provide solid reasoning behind his assertions. Plus it's nice to have another swordsman's point of view around here.

While I'm not qualified to judge STeven, I certainly do appreciate him! I have learned more from him than any two (or three) other people, and while occasionally abrasive (often entertainingly so), I applaud his audacity. By standing up and plainly stating his opinions, especially when they go against the popular opinion, he repeatedly puts himself in the line of fire.

I can say that those of you who haven't met him are in for a treat- and I won't say more than that.

STeven, thanks for Pasadena- what a great experience!

Short story to add to this thread. About 3 years or so ago, I developed an interest in a deceased maker from Oregon named Royal Hanson. I was told his work was exceptional, top tier, and he didn't make that many knives. I sent an email to Coop and Jim Small asking both if they could help me with additional info, etc.. Coop said to call a guy named Steven Garson from Bladeforums. I'm not really shy, but deceided to write instead, not knowing what to expect. Less than a day went by, and I got a virtual biography of Royal Hanson. I discovered he had an exact model dagger that was of interest to me at the time, in his own collection.. He endorsed it, and offered to soften the bolster edges for me because he felt they were to crisp.. Steven didn't know me from Adam... Nuff said.. Best Regards, Rich

I'm a good friend and a supporter. STeven has pissed me off to the point of maddening, but we have both learned to chill, choose our words more carefully, and resume the discussion.

In the end we are both elevated. I think that's a synopsis of his forum presence as well.

No one has better command of language and clarity of thought. Plenty more people have more tact. He'd be the first to acknowledge, and often dismiss this. His clarity sometimes comes like a slap in the face. That said, I'm liking his firm handshake instead. :)

Cheers!

Coop

STeven's a good guy and has a wealth of knowledge of the custom knife world and is always willing to share and give advice. I appreciate all the help he's given me over the years and when we first met I wanted to *bonk* him over the head! He may seem a little bit opinionated at times but for a New Yorker he really isn't that bad. If he goes on an all out attack at times, I blame that on the Samurai in him... :D

STeven said he would kneecap at Blade, if chimed in on this thread and started telling the truth, so...

I have known STeven for years now. He's top notch. Period. Because of his enthusiasm and his insistence, my goal of a relationship with KERSHAW came to be. I am greatly in his debt, and I am proud to call him my friend. He still calls me regularly, and I always enjoy our conversations, even when he tells me I'm full of S***. He has everything I respect: Knowledge, passion and the stones to speak his mind.

Had to comment on this.
Last year I posted a knife on here with a brass fittings and it was promptly ripped to shreds by Mr Garsson.
My first thoughts were,... well, I'll not say as I might get banned.:D

However...Funnily enough my next knife had stainless fittings! I believe when I posted on here I thanked him for the kick up the arse.:D

I realise I'm nowhere even close to being in the same league as 99% of makers on here, but anything to help me improve what I do can only be beneficial. I now only use brass when people ask for it. (Which is quite often, as lots of people over here still like it;))

Some brutal honesty isn't such a bad thing!

Cheers,

Ian
