Sorry I'm sure this has been covered a lot. I've searched the net and forums but always see different approaches. Just curious what others out there are doing, I've tried a lot of the different techniques and pretty much failed at all lol but o well it's fun.

How do you make the hole for a stick tang knife? I'm specifically making a single piece solid wood handle for an old Leuk. I once attempted to make a handle for (and totally failed); I tried making a stacked style stick tang handle (with different types of wood). For this second attempt after I manage to get the old handle off, I'd like to use a solid piece of wood and peen a piece of brass on the end.

I've tried to heat the ends of tang and burn the tang thru (hated this method, thought I'd ruin my temper) and also just drilling holes. But with a long solid wood piece do I just drill a large hole with long bit and call it a day? Sounds simple but I always managed to mess up stick tangs haha. Sorry for the long explanation ! Thanks!

Two options: First is to drill the hole larger than the tang and then fill with epoxy during assembly. Second is to drill the hole small than the tang and burn it in like you tried. You can only do this if you already have a hole to work with. Keep the blade cool (all the way past the ricasso) by wrapping it in a wet rag. Of course, you also fill with epoxy during assembly.
