I have seen some guys with custom tools for hogging out wood handles for stick tang blades. Does anyone have a source for these? Here is a pic of a fellow maker that had one. Also, any good files (size or manufacturer) that are useful for removing material when doing stick tangs. Thanks all!

You can fashion a broach out of sawzall blades and a course cut round file. They both can be ground to fit your needs.

If you look at the design, those broaches are extremely simple. One could be made easily using a piece of steel. The teeth on the broach in the pic you posted look like small pyramids. I would personally rather have them with one side(the side facing the handle) being flat. If you do a search on these forums for "broach" you'll find a bunch of pics of good designs.

You wouldn't really even need to make a handle for it and just use a file handle.

I made one out of hacksaw blades but will probably make a better one out of 3/16" stock soon.

Will your tang will protrude thru a pommel ?

I may use the prior mentioned broaches to square up a hole,
But it gets roughed out using one of those round grit embedded hacksaw blades.
Usually I just rough out the tapered hole oversize,. Let epoxy fill in the voids.

It won't extend through a pommel. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks. I will just try and craft something, the Bruce Bump version is $76. I have enough saw blades and scrap metal that I could fashion something.

I make my own as well. Start with a small round bar and heat the end in the forge. Fold over an inch or so and forge weld. Square everything up and cut teath into it with a thin blade on the angle grinder.

I built one out of a scrap piece of 3/32 154CM stuck into a piece of 3/4" dowel rod. Did cryo and a low temper (400 or so). Dirt simple, cuts very well.
