A chainsaw. This is a hard nosed Bar from a Duromatic.
Dan, your missing out on a lot by not using them. I sharpened it to a so-so edge just for the fun of it. I wanted to see if it would break before I put the handle on it and I wanted to do some scuffing before I put a did the final grinds.
I started chopping 2X4's and was pleased. It still takes three chops which is normal for my large knives, but edge retention seems very very good. Another clue that it is L6.
Overall I'm pretty happy. Now the work really starts.
Don one thing that struck me, you said the retreated steel seems to be the same as the cut offs
this tells me it's to soft at least for what I use... I've straitened out
a lot of bars that have had the butt end of trees fell on from the woodsmen,
they will kink NOT brake, if you do have the same RC now as with the cut offs , you see what I mean?
L6 I'm not to sure about that one...
I can't see them spending the money for it, these are perishables for them..
I would think that they would use a grade of steel that they could max it out in the heat treat
and still have a 40+ RW JMHO. and be cost effective at the same time.. I'd like to see a RW on it.

Bruce I'm not sure right now
but if I were to make laminated bars I'd put the two outer layers as the harder of the three, the rails are what takes the wearing. the inner would be for support only, so if the sections are of different grades it would be
Back ass wards
opps edited to say I like that shape Don just not to sure about the
steel
