Finished it at lunch today...

It is 19" overall

14" Blade made from a Stihl Duromatic Saw Bar

The handle is cast Bronze with a 1/32 steel slab added to each side for balance weight....It balances right in front of the nose cap.

The cover on the handle is imported and stabalized...Truck Bed liner. :footinmou

The Nose Cap is poured pewter.

I decided it must be a scalper...yesterday !

OH....sharpened false edge and sand blasted blade.

Very nice. We need more tough handles :D :p I bet that stuff costs a fortune! :p ;)

Don, are you just grinding these to shape and then sharpening? Where are you getting the bars from?

That is great. Simple and to the point but still looks nice.Do you have a total weight? Have you done any more comparing of a untreated Stihl bar to the one that you heat treated? Curious if you have and what you found. Is that the spray on bed liner from a can and how many coats did you put on the handle? Sorry for all of the questions but that is one of the best knives that I have seen in a while (something about it really makes me like it).

Scott, on this one I profiled it, ground the edge close and heat treated as if it were L6. I don't have my hardness tester right now so I don't have a real hardness, but....I can't cut it with a hacksaw. Stripped the teeth right away. I got the blade from a local saw sharpening company that saves all sorts of things for me.

Mark, I did compare the HT'ed blade to the cutoffs I had. I couldn't tell any real difference using a file.

I did sharpen it (Blade side thank God, If I'd sharpened the false edge too, I'd be wearing it) and test cut it on a 2X4..no problems. I also brass rodded it and ithe edge had spring to it.
anyway....I couldn't tell the difference with a file. I tried drilling both with a masonry bit (My standard for drilling hardened steel) It wore two down with little more than a big dent.

It is from a can and I can't remember the name now, Came from Auto zone and I've used it on a couple of knives and a bicycle rack I made for my trailer hitch. I can't complain about it...except, it's ....truck bed liner.

I have 3 or 4 coats on. Put the first coat on and let dry for 5 minutes. Fill in any spots that need it with the second coat. Both done at 6 to 10 inches.

The last coat or 2 is done at about 3 feet. As far back as i can spray. That's what causes the rough texture. Let dry for 24 hours before serious handling.

Sounds like a fun project. I'll scout around for some at the local farm supply stores. BTW, hope your head is healing up ok. That was a nasty cut.

I like that blade profile!! I too would like to pour some pewter ferules... in a perfect world of course :)

nice knife... mitch

Mark, here's a little closer look at the handle. The one at the top is and Aceital handle I made for a hatchet. The plastics people said nothing would stick to it. I've used the hatchet for a summer and a deer season and haven't even chipped it.

Thanks for the close up. I sprayed some on a Brend hachet handle and have found it to be exactly as you describe as far as holding up to use, it just doesn't go to far in the looks department. I looked and those bars come in sizes up to over 40"! You should get your hands on one of those. I have to ask, but if I, or anyone for that matter, can get our hands on a bar can we "borrow" some of your ideas on this one. I just have fallen in love with the whole package on this one.

Mark...All that talking about cutting off heads and chopping bodies in two, got me thinking about areas where you can't take a gun. A great example is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of people get killed there but you still can't take a gun.

Anyway, I tried to design a real fighter. It's no good for anything else, but it is a hell of a fighter.

It's a keeper. I thought about selling it but I think about that with every one. I really like this knife and I'm going to be selfish and keep it. The excuse will be to evaluate it for future knives to sell (Like I'll make another fighter) :o

Oh......Mark Nelson. Sure, feel free. I want to play with some of the bigger ones too. I might try to make a Wakashi from one.
