still out of vodka

After reading this thread earlier today, I mosied over to liquor store and picked up a bottle of Vodka. I haven't had vodka in a while, I'm more of a Gin and Bourbon (and beer) kind of guy. I got a bottle of Imperia, a Russian Vodka imported from St. Petersburg. It's pretty dayum good! Very smooth, with almost no aftertaste. Just that nice warmth going into the belly.

I drink all of my liquor straight, from a shotglass, with no chaser. I drink only bourbon with my bourbon, scotch with my scotch, gin with my gin.

Here are my favorites, since we're all sharing:

Gin: Hendricks- from Scotland= hands down the best- it's in a league of its own.

Scotch: Laphroig! Looovve Laphroig. I'm starting to get into Compass Box Peat Monster. I dig the smoky, heavy, peaty Islay thing.

Bourbon: Wild Turkey! Oh God it's good. I've had lots that cost more, but none I liked better.

Irish Whiskey: Jamesons (is there any other choice?)

Vodka: This Imperia stuff I just picked up is probably the best I've had. I prefer it to Grey Goose and Belvedere, the only other super-premiums I've had.

In the end, it's all good, so long as it does the trick. I'm setting in for a long evening of boozin'. The wife's out of town, and I don't have anything to do tomorrow.

Gentlemen, start your binges!!!!!

I'm all for your game plan except for the shot glass. Nice booze deserves a nice glass.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear in conveying my meaning. I did not mean to suggest that there's anything wrong with vodka or vodka martinis, nor did I mean to imply that a preference for vodka martinis is a sign of barbarism.

What I did mean to say is that a "martini" is a drink made with gin, and any drink that substitutes some other liquor for the gin, whether it be a "vodka martini" or an "appletini," or whatever, is not a martini, it's a "vodka martini" or an "appletini," or whatever.

My complaint is about the bastardization of the language and the degeneration of the art of mixology that now requires me to specify that I want gin in my martini even though that, by definition, is what a martini is. It's like ordering a cheeseburger and getting something made with tofu or ground turkey or TVP because you failed to specify a beef cheeseburger.

Agreed! Along the same lines, I used to get annoyed when I would order a 'Zinfandel' in a restaurant, and the waiter asked if that was "the red or the white?" :grumpy: I would have to explain that there is "Zinfandel" and "White Zinfandel", but there is no such wine as "Red Zinfandel". Then my wife would get annoyed at my sarcastic manner.

If'n you fellows don't mind a lady stepping up to the plate here, I personally prefer the luxury of a fine Islay scotch...while watching Mr. Butler in "300."

A girl needs a knife....

You'll find plenty of Scotch fans here, azshaman. In fact, you'll find some die-hard Scotch fans here.

Vodka is not acceptable in martinis, period. If you aren't using gin, you aren't drinking a martini, end of story.

I like Tanqueray, personally. Vodka is a flavorless, silly liquor. I just don't get it.

This is same "Russian Standard" but top of the line. Russian Standard is almost official vodka in Russia this days - and it is good. But "Jewel of Russia" I like better.

In alcohol beverages it is very important to have the best. I absolutely agree that average vodka is just spirit mixed with water. Including Lithvonian Stolichnaya - they bought over this brand and it is not Russian, it is made from some Russian spirit as it is stated on the bottle, but it is not Russia made.

According to new EU ruling pushed by Poland now any mix of spirit and water can be called - Vodka (Poland need to sell their potato based alcohol). Even cognac can be called Vodka if somebody like to label it this way ib EU.

But good Vodka is not spirit and water mix, and it is not tasteless - little bit of sugar little bit of dryed bread - many secret things which make it smoothe and nice.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thank you, O' Cocktail Master, for the definitive word.

It's a vodka thing. You just wouldn't understand. :p

Hey Guyon... Glad you like the Tito's . I have to admit to a little bit of tito's inflicted liver damage this weekend myself.

I think I am down to one good brain cell. It is just really good at dodging alcohol. :)

The Poles invented vodka (the Russians just took to it big time), and it was made from potatoes, so try one like Chopan or Luksusowa - you won't be sorry.:D

if ur not living in the states, try absinthe plus martini

both made from wormwood, containing among other cool toxins(like very very high alcohol content): thujone

it'll absolutely blow ur mind!!
:D

I gotta get me one of those F1s. Is Fallkniven still laminating their blades, or are they doing solid VG-10 blades now?

All I know about wormwood is that Hamlet mutters the word while he's busy trapping Claudius.

Well, I am not saying it is bad - it is not vodka, it is potatka I guess. Honest label should be potato based alcohol which Poland like to name vodka for some reason. Every country has strom alcohol beverage - Bolgarian- Rakia, German-Schnaps, Scottish-scotch, Russian-vodka, Ukrainian-gorilka but Polish do not want to call it somehow else then vodka.

About invention - who knows - It also very well may be that being part of Russia for several hundreds years they learn some stuff, but vodka was around Russia way before Ekaterina The Great mandates to plant potatoes which cause some raids in oppose to, this may be even happen in polish part of Russia.

Vodka was state business even at Ivan The Terrible days, right before Smuta and following polish invasion (that time they have fake czar for Russians - FakeDmitry, so when Russians realized this they elect new czar family Romanovs and kick Polish out).

Thanks, Vassili.

So we've learned that real martinis should ONLY be made from gin, and that real vodka is ONLY made from potatoes, and that you should really ONLY drink your vodka straight.

Man, I'm glad we got all that cleared up! :D

Time for a beer! :p

my F1 is still laminated, i bought it a month or two ago

knives + absinthe is a dangerous combination tho, made vincent van gogh cut his ear off when he drunk too much one time

and me, well
"The first time i drunk absinthe, I was at my brothers place.
I found myself talking for hours to somebody who simply wasnt there.
As that chair was empty, my brother said.
Later when I got back home my bedroom I somehow imagined to be a haunted dinosaur graveyard.
I had to climb over the graves and bones to reach my bathroom.

The second time i drunk absinthe, I hacked into my frontdoor with an axe...

The third and next time i will be spending a couple of nights in an ancient forest.

I just hope i return in one piece..."

No no no - real vodka is only made from grain - wheat or rye with crystal clear water, well distilled and slightly flavored.

Potato vodka is "potato vodka", not real vodka.

Thanks, Vassili.

...you just reminded me that I have a bottle of Jade Verte Suisse lingering about here somewhere. Also had some Jade Nouvelle-Orléans a couple years back which was very tasty, highly recommended. Neither caused such lunacy, figure I either didn't have enough...or didn't have knives in hand. Have to crack the seal on the Verte Suisse and see what happens with an AK in hand. ;)

If interest is sparked...some light reading:
