Still Shopping for a Smaller Lockblade--Under 3 Inches

I love my Benchmade 806D2, but I violate the Seattle Municipal Code every time I carry it because the blade is longer than 3 1/2". Funny, you can buy them in Seattle--You just cant carry them :(

The "Sheeple" threads and an "Is that a cell phone or a knife" comment from a co-worker got me thinking about work. The Employee Manual limits me to a 3" blade. I objected to this and several other portions of the recently-adopted Handbook. The HR Director said I could strike out a couple provisions (NOT the 3" provision or personal or vehicle search provisions) and has been looking into the rest for months. As a result, I have not signed or returned the acknowledgement. Washington is an "at will" state, however, so if someone with firing authority doesn't like my 806D2 I am toast no matter what the manual says. Carrying my 806D2 to work is not worth my risking my job. As a result, I'm looking at the following EDC options:

*Cammilus EDC in Talonite $150
*Cammilus EDC in 154CM $50
*Cammilus EDC in D2 $85
*Benchmade 705 $94
*Benchmade 770 series $107-135
*Spuderco Calypso Jr. Lightweight $43

I like the AXIS Lock a lot, but I'd also like to try the Calypso Jr's full-flat-ground VG-10 blade. I like the looks of the EDC and the praise it's received here, but I still haven't found a place to handle it locally.

It would also be worth checking out what Buck knives offers in that size. They have a wide range to choose from that look like they would fit your needs.

Why don't you check oout the Spyderco Kiwi and Mouse for your office. Both of these knives are 2" or less and they are almost cute even to sheeple types. They will do typical knife chores and will keep your boss of your case.

Spuderco? Is that Sal's new tactical potato peeler? :D

3.5 inches is a pretty long blade, IMO. Everything I carry is about 3" or less. Too many options here to even list, but Spyderco has a bunch, as do most makers.

dragonfly
Delica
Salsa
Jester
Native
705
CRKT has a bunch...even Buck and Cold Steel

On the larger question, if you are genuinely worried about your job, this is not the economy to be "taking a stand" and losing your job. Keep it in your pocket. Keep a slim SAK or slipjoint around if you absolutely MUST use a knife at work.

BTW, "car search"???? What the heck is THAT all about???

As a lover of custom and semi-customs, i should point out that if you can spend about $200 on your purchase, and want a BEAUTIFUL knife, get a William Henry Kestral with the MOP handles. Their workmanship is flawless and theyre a very pretty little knife. I think their workmanship is on par with Chris Reeve, and thats saying something! Its probably not what youre looking for, just thought id throw it out there.

I like my Calypso Jr. L.W. alot, so I don't think you can go wrong with it. One of the Mini Griptilians may be a good choice also (the green of purple handles would make it look less "tactical").

I'm very happy with my 705. Just a tad under 3 inches. The 770 seems a little on the delicate side for me.

Ak wack

I just won a 3" Delta Z liner lock. It's got green aluminum and black G10 scales so it's a little thicker and more colorful than I'm used to. I haven't had a chance to use it yet except for just playing around but it's got a smooth action and tight lockup. I don't know what kind of steel or what the knife costs but you might want to keep them in mind. Even my wife said it was pretty.

Spyderco Delica in VG-10
I second that. The FRN Delica with the VG-10 blade is very light, thin, and it cuts like nothing else outta the box.

Also, like Akwacko said, the 705 is a cool little knife. It's under 3 inches and has the AXIS lock. I carry that when the 710 is too big to have around.

How about a spyderco navigator in VG-10.
I really like the one I got.

You're describing the following:
Spyderco Dragonfly, Salsa, Delica
Camillus EDC (for me, 154CM cause I'm cheap)
Kershaw Vapor (It says 3")

Well, you are going to get my standard answer for a folder with a 3 inch-long blade; The FRN Delica with the VG-10 steel. Someone mentioned the Spydie Native, but I believe its' blade is 3&1/8 inches-long, so it's slightly over your 3 inch limit. Also, note that in the 2002 Spyderco catalog, the FRN Delica's blade is right at 3 inches, while the all-stainless Delica is listed with a 2&7/8th inch-long blade.

diletante;

Where do you work?

Blade length limits at work are rediculous, IMHO, butCAR SEARCHES are over the top!

The Camillus EDC is a great small knife, worth considering. I recently traded mine off, simply because it was too small for my hands.

The BM 705 is a great choice as well.

I highly recommend the Spyderco Calypso, Jr.. ;)

My PE Calypso Jr. is one little Spydie that packs a punch when it comes to any cutting task. BTW, that VG-10 steel can be sharpened to a  WICKED  sharp edge.

Good Luck

I'd get the Bm 705 since it's going to be the toughest knife of the bunch.
Unless your just opening mail or somthing.

I just measured mine. It's actually about 3 1/16 inches long. If you're really concerned about problems, I'd skip the FRN Delica. If you have the money, how about a small Sebenza.

United Cutlery's Paragee, designed by Darrel Ralph. Sub 3" blade, frame lock, good steel, real small, pocket clip, cheap. It's got a great review in the magazines.
