Wow! Nasty nasty nasty! Bought from Tomars a second time and again everything stinks like cig. smoke. There will not be a third time.

Wow, that sucks. You should consider contacting Ka-Bar / toooj about that issue, maybe Ka-Bar can kick Tomar's ass for letting employees smoke in the storage room.

hey, contact Tomars First maybe? yeah.

seal everything in clear poly bags. smoke all you want.

course, it's why i make sure stuff i bug from ebay is sealed and/or from a smoke free home. ONCE, and only ONCE i bought something that was a smoking home for like 9 years. pretty much can't fix that.

I got a bk9 that reeked like cigs and incense, and the smell does go away. I ordered a bk7 at the same time for my brother-in-law and his smelled fine.

It's not much help I guess, but all my gear stinks of woodsmoke. Leave it near your next couple campfires and cigar smoke will be replaced by camp smoke from your last trip.

Wow, that's interesting. I read your other post and chalked it up to "Eh, stink happens". Keep us informed.

My first double tap. Wonder what did that. Hmm, interesting indeed.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who doesn't give a sniff test to my new knives?

J/K, but really, what material on a knife absorbs odors? Grivory maybe? Wouldn't it be the sheath that smells, if anything, and if so, can't it be washed without hurting it?

They sheath on mine was the offender, but it was the box that I noticed. It didn't require even leaning over to smell it. It was like when someone is wearing too much cologne. I think the box was used as an incense holder. the knife itself never smelled.

Uhm, what Bladite said - Tomar's is its own company, you should complain there first. I've (literally) purchased over $1,000 in product from them and have never suffered the cigarette problem.

I had the same thing happen to me, But this wouldn't and won't stop me from buying from them again.
Their service was great and the smell went away.

Agreed!
My first order stunk but it did go away, didn't keep me from making another order. As said great service and fast shipping!

Thanks for the replies. The sheath is what really smells. It was very stinky as soon as the box was opened, almost a blast of smoke smell. I thought the first one (BK2) may have been a fluke, but no...the 9 was worse due to the sheath. I agree they are fast shippers and have good prices, but as a customer I will not buy from them again. Smelling that stink just took a little bit away from the "new" feeling when you should be excited. You should not be thinking how crappy this thing smells. I can do without handing the knife to my son and having him hand it back and say it stinks. Don't get me wrong, this is not a big deal, the smell will subside, but as customer I will to go elsewhere next time. Thanks. Jeff

I've been a retail business owner before, and agree wholeheartedly that no new merchandise should be exposed to smoke. It just surprised me to see in the OP where you said that your second knife stunk. I read that literally. I'm kind of anal that way, and that stinks too!

With all the folks saying they've experienced the same thing from the same retailer before, I have to ask if any of y'all have ever complained to him about it? Maybe he doesn't realize that smoke sticks to his merchandise as bad as it obviously does. I'm a reformed smoker of 35 years. The only reason it would bug me is that it would make me want a smoke, and I've been quit for almost 10 years now, so I totally get how hard it is not to smoke. Maybe he doesn't get how stanky it is to non-smokers.

If people have complained and it's still happening, then he has no one to blame but himself if his business ain't what it should/could be.

I too recently ordered a Dozier folder and Eskabar from Tomars and noticed the smell, but it wasn't bad enough that I would bother mentioning anything. Of course I enjoy the smell of many cigars and mine had no sheath other than the glass filled nylon. Just strip your knife with nasty chemicals and force a patina with apple cider vinegar -- worked like a charm for my Eskabar, no cigar smell!

On a serious note, if you email Tomars you should provide a link back to this thread to validate that you aren't the only one.

all my orders from them stank. However, their price is the lowest online. their shipping is super fast. they give good communication. they give me free pens, keychains, etc... .

buy elsewhere and pay more, maybe not have good comm., no freebies, and take longer to ship.

i'll put up with the smokey smell! besides, it goes away with use.
