Checkering files might be a quicker way to add grip texture to an aluminum knife.

Filing aluminum can be a real nightmare; if you don't use a sharp fresh file, light pressure, and lubricate and clean the file effectively as you go, then it will clog fast, leading to skating and smearing rather than cutting.
