Guess how i cut myself today???????? I ended up with 4 stiches on the back of my hand YES the Back of my hand. I missed the main artery and the tendons by less than a 1/4 inch . I was warned about sharpening the knife last . Well i never made it dull and had a couple more things to do before heat treat. Take a guess what i was doing to cut the back of my hand rob knows so dont say anything lets see. 1 clue it was really dumb. kellyw

Looking at the knife under a light used to light the sanding belt with the belt still running. The tip hit the belt and slammed the knife into your free hand.

Maybe you were drilling holes in it, and the blade got caught, and spun around and slit your hand?

going only by the amount of stories I've heard that were buffer related compared to everything else I'd also go with a buffer

left your brain in the other room
be careful and learn form your pain (i have my own scars ) and telling someone cant all ways get the point across

gaah, you were drilling weren't you? I recall we warned you about that too *shakes finger in motherly fashion*. ALWAYS put something between where the blade will spin and you, in addition to clamping.

Just be glad your shenanigans didn't cause a cut on Marlyn loving hands; Dont take that the wrong way rob,I ment she wraps well. We'd form a possey and come after you.

I actually cut myself the other day too, dropped a knife and tried to catch it. The good news is the point dug in deep enough to make the tip rotate so it landed handle first. that is a good thing, right guys?

This is how it happened ,I had the knife inthe vice and never duct taped the entire blade as i normally do . I was filing putting some last touches on with the dremel tool i set it down and the dremel did a half roll under the knife blade when i lifted my hand after setting down the dremel is when my hand hit the blade as if i bumped it.I only felt a slight bump and very slight sting until i looked no real blood to speak of and i opened the cut to see how deep i could see boneand missed the tendons and main atery by a 1/4 inch. That was so stupid not to cover the whole blade. IM LEARNING SHARPENING IS THE LAST THING YOU DO . kellyw

Many a maker has had a slight or serious injury from a blade clamped in a vice or in a filing jig with an exposed tip, sharpened or not. Definitely be careful with that kind of thing. My filing jig extends past the point of the knife so there isn't a chance I can stab myself in the side while turning around or walking past.

And sharpening is the last thing I do before delivering it to the customer, aside from some appropriate cutting tests.

Guess it goes to say, never leave a blade sticking out of a vise. If I absolutely have to have a blade sticking out I always keep a hand on it to ensure I don't bump it accidentally. Glad to hear it was repairable. Heal Fast and get back to work.

I was wearing cut a few weeks ago. My friend was having me help him with a new knife he was making. Well in his excitement to having custom knife. He had sharpened the blade before we had put the handle on it. Well i was doing the handle. Just rolling it around to round the handle, it caught my finger.
Well I am learning. I used masking tape last week on all the blades. Still ended up with two cuts. One put my thumb out commission for few days. My left index finger was cut by the edge of belt sander.

I have aloy of respect for the buffer even though i cut my hand other wise.I should take a picture and place it above my grinder. kellyw

This should go in the safety sticky thread.

When bad stuff happens, it happens real quick. Power tools or not.

my buddy art summers told me you arent a knifemaker until you cut yourself . not long after him telling me that i cut myself while taping up a blade so i wouldnt get cut.

No pics and it didn't really happen....

I was delivering three of my knives yesterday to the jade dealer I barter trade with. He was gone to a gem show and left the stone we were trading for knives out for me. I went in to chat with his wife and her poodle bit me in the crotch.... Just like in movies or cartoons....

Should I post pictures? :eek::o
