I'm mulling over the idea of a small stock removal hatchet (think along the lines of the GB Mini) to pair with my camp sword. Anyone have steel recommendations, grinding tips, point me to a decent tutorial, etc? Lots of good forging stuff, but my google-fu ain't finding stock removal ideas. Anyone ever made one with stock removal? I'd love to see pictures of examples. Thanks in advance.

I'd say 1075 would be a good start on the steel. Talk to Iz Turley or John at JK knives. Both have made stock removal hatchets or axes.

Might be hard finding stock thick enough. But if it's been done, it's clearly out there somewhere. I'd like to try this too, if anyone can recommend a place to get thick enough stock.

Are you talking about a hatchet with a wood haft or like the Winkler types with a full tang style handle? If the latter, 3/8" 1045 might work well, or 1/4" 5160 would be cheap and easy.

There is also the hawks that are held into a split haft. Flat head with a flat grind.

I had this waterjet cut from 1/4 A2, I added the brass cap to give it some thickness at the butt end for driving tent stakes

Patrick, what are the overall dimensions on that hatchet? Did you find the 1/4" to give you enough "meat" to grind on? Finally, what's the grind? It appears convex?

I will have to get the dimensions, the 1/4 is more than enough stock for the axe, I added the butt cap to make a wider hammer. This one is convex, I have another that I plan to grind hollow.

There are two predrilled pin holes and it is epoxied. Here are some pics of another blank with dimensions.
