I've been forging knives for a while. I want to make a kukri but I got bad news from my doctor and I'm not allowed to work the forge anymore, for the foreseeable future. I think stock removal is still a possibility. I was just wondering if anyone has an angle on how I might be able to go about this thing.

I would find someone to forge the curve in the blade on a piece of bar stock for you. It doesn't have to be someone who knows how to forge a blade, just get the curve and hammer it back to flat. Once that is done, do stock removal. Otherwise you have to buy a wide piece of steel and cut the blade out and have a lot of leftover steel, which may not be a bad thing either

Andrew it's a suspected heart issue. I'm not allowed to do anything physical for a while until I'm cleared which could be a while. So swinging the hammer is out but standing behind a grinder is something I should be able to do.

Hope everything works out for you.

There's always the option of a power hammer or a press I suppose, though not everything has the extra cash (or space) lying around. Not exactly something you pick up at the local hardware either.

Other than that, Brett has the answer I'd have given.

I've made Smatchet's by stock removal.

Make your own take on a Kukri by stock removal. With a flat Platen, 1-5" or larger wheels, many makers have done this.

Look around on the interwebs for ideas. I wish you the best and god's Speed on a full recovery from your malady

Sorry to hear about the medical issues brother. Prayers for healing and recovery.

To echo what Laurence said; stock removal of khukri-style knives is totally possible... you just need to start with bigger material and be willing to cut and grind most of it away. I did THIS KNIFE last year, and it was fairly straight forward.

Best wishes.

I've got a buddy in Anchorage who has done stock removal kukris in the past. They turned out well, so I can at least tell you it can be done :)

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. Erin that Kukri is beautiful. I really love that walnut handle. I think I'll be fine and it's probably reversible but I'm going to be down for a while. I'm thinking I'm going to try to get a friend to help me bend the metal this weekend. I don't know why that didn't occur to me earlier.

Awesome. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Keep us posted.
Again, prayers sent for a speedy (and full) recovery.
