My wife and I are looking to put some inexpensive slipjoints in as stocking stuffers and I've narrowed the brands down to these three:
1. Shrade
2. Steel Warrior
3. Rough Rider

I'm leaning towards Schrade as it is a well known brand but I've heard good things about the other two in these forums.

What would the knowlegeable and helpfull friends here in the forum recommend? Am I overlooking another brand that would be better? I want to limit the expense to $10 or less per knife.

Many thanks.

I have had nothing but good luck with the Steel Warrior brand. I have given away a bunch of them -all have been well received.

Have you considered the Victorinox Classic? It's less than 10 bucks nearly everywhere and is a classy stocking stuffer.

Many thanks for your recommendation for Steel Warrior. Didn't want to give out SAKs, at least not this year.

I'll total the recommendations and use that brand as the stocking stuffers.

At the price you want to stay at, it will limit it to the current production, off shore produced Schrades.

The good things you hear about Schrade, are the U.S made versions... Schrade went out of business a few years ago. It was a very sad day :(

The RR 's get really good reviews on here. My son has a Steel Warrior peanut, and when it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. Good F&F, and it came with a very good edge on it. I would think you would be fine with either choices.

Rough rider, they have dozens of patterns and lots of choice of handle material and are really great knives for a great price.

Regards

Robin

Were using the Spyderco Grasshopper slipit, for stuffers this year, great little knife for sure.

Let's try to keep to the traditional knives folks...thanks.

I can't speak for the Steel Warrior, but in my experience the RR beat the Schrade hands down. You may have a hard time landing many RR's at or under $10 though.
One brand you did not mention that impressed me is the Boker Magnum. I bought 4 examples in the Red Jigged Bone and they are really built exceptionally well. My Magnum Copperhead is the best of all the <$20 slippies I have bought and is better in F&F than 90% of the knives I own.
I don't know how many knives you are looking for, but if you shop around you might find dealers selling "collections" where you get all the patterns in a particular handle material, or all the different handle materials in a particular pattern. If the collection has 8-10 knives or more you can probably keep them in your price range.

I left you a visitor message.

Rough Rider. I just bought a sowbelly for 8.99 to the door. Good knives. I've gotten a bunch for under $10.

I always keep some Rough Riders in stock for small gifts. If you didn't know they were inexpensive knives... you wouldn't know. ;)

So far, it looks like Rough Rider is winning with 5 votes, Steel Warrior 1, and none for Schade.

FLymon, I got your message- thanks.

We will be buying 12 slippies for those who are wondering.

Guess I'll talley up the total votes tomorrow because time is getting short.

I am appreciative to those of you who took the time to reply to my thread. Wonderful crew here and can't thank you enough.

i would say RR. you'll get both a great price, and a decent quality, usable knife. not to mention bone and wood etc. look classy and more expensive.

RR for sure. I know of a great US source if you want to PM or email me, if posts like this are allowed?

Rough Rider. I have one with the imitation tortoiseshell and one with another variation and both are very nice. Most of them are around the $10 mark, some a little more, some just a tad bit less. So far I am pleased with mine.

Depending on the people that are going to be receiving them, I may give a great deal of thought to the Vic classic.

If these are not knife people, the little classic has a few things going for it. One, it's tiny enough to go on a keyring, so it does not have to be really carried. This means that the person will really have it on them when they leave the house. Non knife people won't remember to carry the knife because it's not on their radar.

Two, it's got a few useful tools on it. The sissors really work, as does the nail file and screw driver tip and tweezers.

Some years ago I gave out classics as stocking stuffers to the non knife people in the family. I was a little tired of me being the only one with a knife, and having it borrowed. Karen's cousin's Scott, Barbara, Bob, Sam, sis in law Rommilie, Diane, Brother in law Roger, all got a classic. Even Aunt Jane.

The women went nuts over the little sissors and nail file, and the menfolk liked having a little knife. Months later, all were still carrying the classics on the keyring. The keyring made it easy for them. Being attached to their keys, they literally could not leave the house without it. I handed out quick release clips so they could detach the sak easy from the keyring for better use.

One year later, Karen let me know that there were some "requests" for a bit larger knife for food/snack duty. I again for Christmas handed out Victorinox alox solo's that I had made into easy openers. They went into the purses and are still carried. The little classic made converts to the cause, that I don't think would have happened it I had handed out a regular pocket knife.

To this day years later, Scott, or Roger, or Bob, or Diane takes out their little classic and cuts something, instead of "Hey Carl, let me see your knife for a minute."

That's priceless.

This year they are all getting flashlights. Little flashlights for the purses and keyrings. Hopefully no more "Hey Carl, lets see that little flashlight of yours for a minute."

Carl.

Very pleased with the 3 RR's I have. Two Trappers @ $10 and $12 respectively and one Doctors knife @ $8. Exceptional quality for the price.
