Stockman question

This thread reminded me of how much I like carrying medium sized stockman. However, right now I’m don’t have any. I traded away a Case medium stockman and a GEC #66 stockman with Hemlock jigged bone recently for a #38 Farmers Jack that I really wanted. Then I sold my nice 66 SMKW jigged bone stockman to a friend. So now I could use another. What I’d really like to find is a well loved and patina’ed 66 Northfield in red jigged bone from the last run they did.

This one would go great with my tortoise shell acrylic collection :) I found a retailer with this and a few different #66's available but I'm not allowed to mention them here (PM me if interested). I am going to strongly consider picking one up.

waverave waverave I love the Tortoise shell acrylic version. Interesting shield on those. Did you notice how the shield curves to mimic the curve of the 66 frame? There are a few GEC distributors that still have some of the 2017 Calf Ropers in stock. I’m sure we will all regret not getting them while we can.

Haha

The #66 is a great knife, waverave. Congrats on the purchase.

Funny how things work around here...I need to be more careful. I ask a simple question and end up buying another knife :) That #66 told me it needed a good home.

The #66s are addictive that’s for sure. You should check out the Route 66 thread a couple pages back, it’s full of some real beauties. Did you go with the acrylic?

Your blue Case stockman brings back a memory. Years ago while working on a local farm my family and befriended this Amish family. They were hoping to start their own farm and needed to learn a thing, or two. They were big fans of my 6375 Case large stockman and they had to borrow it on a few occasions as they didn’t carry knives... why I’ll never know. My family and I ended up at the local hardware store picking them up a few knives. The father got a blue Case stockman just like yours and he didn’t need to borrow my knife anymore.

johnny twoshoes johnny twoshoes I went with the acrylic I have a fondness for tortoise shell.
What a cool story I'm sure you made their day! A good knife is so useful and a wonderful gift especially for hard working folks.
I'll go check that thread out thanks!

You will love the #66 Calf Roper. My #66 is one of my favorite knives. Some folks have complained about the lighter pulls on the secondary blades, but I actually like that about them. I really should pick up another as a backup in case I ever lose mine.

I’ve always felt the stockman was the quintessential pocket knife. Just hearing the phrase, “pocket knife,” the stockman pattern is what I think of first (followed closely by the Barlow).

Yes, it is quite common for stockman knives to suffer from blade rub to some degree, some worse, some better. But I always have to remind myself that they’re tools first and foremost. For me, that’s part of their charm.

They bring a useful collection of blades to just about any cutting task, beg to be used, and are unabashed about showing the signs and scars of use.

If blade rub and marks bother you, just do what I did...
I took some very fine grit sand paper to the blades and knocked all the shine off. Then I forces a dark patina, but polished it off so the blades took on a nice dull grey color. Now I don't worry about blade rub marks or scratches, it's like a bullet-proof finish.
But then again you might like to keep it shiny and pretty, which is really cool too

Blade rub on a stockman pattern is very common. Even my three-spring Buck 703 Colt has a bit of blade rub! It used to bother me but I've decided to let it go. My knives are tools, after all, and tools should show signs of use. ;) If I were a collector I'm sure I'd have a very different outlook, though.

Lots of enablers here.

I pulled out my little Hen & Rooster stag stockman and the blades don't rub or touch each other. Glad I did as it needed a little lubing. I generally don't buy stockman's. Tend to go with jack knives with two blades.

Excellent choice. The tortoise shell looks so great, it's about my favorite option for acrylic or celluloid. If they make another run of 81 stockmans I'd really want a northfield in tortoise. As a matter of fact I've contemplated getting another tortoise 66 to carry I like it so much. Of course I have my ebony one as one of my most used edc's, that ones a work knife most of the time. I could rave about the 66 stockman a lot.

Let me think ... Sheepsfoot/Sheepsfoot/Coping/Pen ...
Yep More versatile than a one or two blade. :)

My co-carry with a stockman is a 4 blade Scout or a SAK Huntsman.
There are times a spear point is the "better" choice for a task, not to mention how often a punch/awl is exactly what is needed ... or the can opener ... screwdriver ... bottle opener ... saw ...
Oh so true!My moral edc is a Buck 303 that I put a flat grind on the blades and a Alox electrician, awesome combo and a mini griptillian when I feel it

I love my tortoise so much I bought an oily creek from CK and it blew me away. Now I can’t make a choice which to use. But I’m happy about that.
