stockman recommendations

Schrade did make a 4 1/2" Old Timer stockman back in the 80's. It was a nice round bolstered pattern, and the pattern number is 858. Nicknamed "The Lumberjack", they are a pocketful, and were packaged with and without a nice leather sheath. Offered in both 1095 carbon and STAINLESS, the SS version Schrades were generally marked SCHRADE+ on the tang stamp. I would say this pattern is somewhat scarce, but not rare. Usually they bring a decent price in an auction, more if offered in carbon steel. The round bolsters make them kind of unique in this size range.

Stockmans are my favorites. I have a bunch of small & medium, but only one large one, a Case 6.5 CV/bonestag Stockman, and it's been ridden hard since the day I got it. It gets carried quite a bit, especially when I need more cutting power than I want to put my old 80T through.

The large Stockman is a lot of knife, at the upper end of what I consider to be "pocketable". Another large Stockman is the Buck 307 Wrangler. (Stainless blades on that one.)

thx - cpr

I am in a minority here I think, but I have been very pleased with the Moore Maker Knives I have owned. They have been my favorite production slipjoints. I have both a 4 1/4, and a 4 1/2 large stockman from MM, the 4 1/2 is my favorite, getting it rehandled right now, and a new sheath to carry it on my belt. Their 1095 steel takes and holds a good edge for me. It is right around your cost. Give them a look to.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Durbin

Your no minority Durbin. I love my 2 Mooremakers.

The Boker Appaloosa Stockman is an awesome knife. I have had one since Christmas of last year and I love it. It takes a great edge and will hold it for a while. I would suggest it or the Case 6.5 Bonestag. I have never held or owned the Case but I am sure it is worth the money.

Just as a thought, have you considered a Cold Steel Stockman? They have been discontinued but are still available, the large stockman can be found for around $40.00. These were made with Carbon V steel and are very nice to sharpen and hold an edge well. Basic black jigged scale material makes for a classic look.

 Thats a trapper?

my current one is an old shrade 80T
The one you already own is perfect, IMO.

Looking for something a little different, I've been happy will all of my recent Case purchases so I would lean towards their large stockman with CV steel and amber bone.

Oops....sorry....how about these?

+1 and +2 from me Durbin and 'hawk.

In fact I just finished sharpening all three blades on my smooth yellow bone #5304 (large stockman) and threw it into my pocket in your honor.:thumbup:

Blues,
I have that one, that is a great knife! Good choice for your carry today! I bought that from your recommendation in an older stockman thread. thanks btw! ;)

My pleasure of course, Barritt.

Hey, again thank you for the further suggestions. Bob W I too am rather fond of the
80T and am very happy with her, I decided to give her some company asides from the
120T and little bit of a break from daily carry. There was a 340T but she disappeared
during a move 4 years ago :(.

I don't mind trappers, its just they don't seem to have the sheepsfoot blade, which I
use frequently, I would seriously consider a trapper that had a sheepsfoot for the
second blade and the clip point primary. I had considered cold steel, they seem to make
alright knives (especially if you believe the dvd's), I have a voyager clip point that seems
to be holding up well, I don't think I'll swing that way though.

I haven't had much time to narrow the list down yet, I'll be able to really start working
on it on wednesday. This has been much appreciated
